ปลาเมือก (Leptocephalus) หมายถึงตัวอ่อนที่มีลักษณะโปร่งแสงของปลาจำพวกปลาไหล ในช่วงอายุสามเดือนแรก ครอบคลุมกว่า 801 สายพันธุ์ใน 24 วงศ์ ปลาเมือกมีกล้ามเนื้อที่บางมาก ร่างกายไม่มีเซลล์เม็ดเลือดแดง มีอวัยวะเพียงปากและลำใส้เส้นเดียวเท่านั้น ไม่มีครีบใดๆทั้งสิ้น มีลำตัวที่โปรงแสงขนาดราว 5 เซนติเมตร ปลาประเภทนี้ถือกำเนิดในยุคครีเทเชียส เมื่อ 140 ล้านปีก่อน
