ลา เป็นสัตว์สี่เท้าชนิดที่มีกีบเท้าเดียวชนิดหนึ่ง อยู่ในวงศ์ Equidae บรรพบุรุษที่เป็นสัตว์ป่าของลาคือลาป่าแอฟริกา (E. africanus) ถูกนำมาเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยงของมนุษย์เพื่อนำมาใช้ประโยชน์ในด้านต่าง ๆ เมื่อประมาณ 3000 ปีก่อนคริสต์ศักราช หรือ 4,000 ปีก่อนคริสต์ศักราชในอียิปต์ และในเมโสโปเตเมีย ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเดียวกับที่มีการนำม้ามาใช้งาน เนื่องจากสัตว์ในสกุล Equus สามารถผสมข้ามสายพันธุ์ได้ ลูกผสมของม้ากับลาคือล่อ ซึ่งเป็นหมันแต่แข็งแรงและอึดทนกว่า การผสมที่ประสบความสำเร็จใช้ลาตัวผู้และม้าตัวเมีย
