ก่อนที่จะเริ่มการพิสูจน์ว่าทองแบบไหนเป็นทองคำแท้ เรามาทำความรู้จักทองคำประเภทต่างๆ กันก่อน ได้แก่
ทองคำแท้
ทองคำแท้ ในที่นี้หมายถึงทองคำที่มีเปอร์เซ็นต์ความบริสุทธิ์สูง ได้แก่ 96.5% (23k) และ 99.9% (24k) หรือมีธาตุอื่นๆ เจือปนในขั้นตอนการผลิตไม่เกิน 3.5%
โดยทองคำแท้นั้นจะมีความแข็งแรงต่ำเนื่องด้วยคุณสมบัติของแร่ทอง มีความนิ่ม และบุบได้ง่าย สามารถใช้ในการซื้อขาย หรือจำนำได้ราคาสูงเทียบเท่ากับราคาทองที่เกิดขึ้นตามท้องตลาด
ทองคำเปอร์เซ็นต์ต่ำ
ทองคำเปอร์เซ็นต์ต่ำ หรือที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ ทองเค ทองเขียว หมายถึงทองที่มีเปอร์เซ็นต์ความบริสุทธิ์ต่ำกว่า 96.5% ลงไป หรือมีธาตุอื่นๆ ผสมเกินกว่า 3.5% ทำให้มีความแข็งแรงทนทานมากกว่าทองคำแท้ และสามารถออกแบบได้หลากหลายดีไซน์มากกว่า รวมไปถึงการตกแต่งสีเป็น Pink Gold หรือ Yellow Gold
เพียงแต่ว่าราคาขายของทองประเภทนี้จะไม่สูงเทียบเท่ากับทองคำแท้ เนื่องจากความบริสุทธ์ของทองที่ค่อนข้างต่ำนั่นเอง แต่ก็สามารถนำไปขายหรือจำนำที่ร้านทองได้ (อาจมีกรณีที่ทองมีความบริสุทธิ์ต่ำเกินไปจนร้านไม่รับซื้อเช่นเดียวกัน) โดยราคานั้นอาจจะมีการผันผวนตามรูปลักษณ์ภายนอก
ทองคำปลอม
ทองคำปลอม ในที่นี้หมายถึงทองที่ไม่ได้มีส่วนผสมของทองคำแท้อยู่เลย โดยอาจใช้โลหะอื่นๆ ชุบทองแค่เพียงภายนอกเท่านั้น ภายในอาจเป็นทองเหลืองเหลืองอลูมิเนียม
โดยทองคำประเภทนี้ก็ได้มีขายที่ร้านทองทั่วไปเช่นเดียวกันเพื่อเป็นทางเลือกให้กับลูกค้า แต่ว่าจะไม่สามารถนำกลับมาขายหรือจำนำได้เหมือนกับทองคำแท้ แต่เนื่องจากรูปลักษณ์ภายนอกที่มีความคล้างคลึงกัน เหล่ามิจฉาชีพจึงอาจนำไปใช้ในการหลอกลวงได้
หากคุณซื้อทองจากร้านที่ไว้ใจได้ ก็สามารถขอใบรับประกันความเป็นทองคำแท้จากทางร้านเพื่อยืนยันทองของคุณได้ แต่หากท่านซื้อมาจากแหล่งอื่น หรือไม่มั่นใจว่าทองที่ได้มาเป็นของแท้หรือไม่
