ประวัติ
M. tuberculosisถูกค้นพบครั้งแรกเมื่อ 24 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2425 โดย Robert Koch ซึ่งต่อมาได้รับรางวัลโนเบลสาขาสรีรวิทยาหรือการแพทย์สำหรับการค้นพบนีใน พ.ศ. 2448 ซึ่งเรียกแบคทีเรียนี้ว่า "Koch's bacillus".
การปรากฏของวัณโรคพบได้ทั่วไปในประวัติศาสตร์ แต่มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อหลายครั้ง ใน พ.ศ. 2263 เริ่มมีการเก็บตัวอย่างจากผู้ป่วยวัณโรค ดังที่นายแพทย์ Benjamin Marten ได้อธิบายไว้ใน A Theory of Consumption ว่าวัณโรคอาจเกิดจากสิ่งมีชีวิตขนาดเล็กที่ส่งผ่านระหว่างผู้ป่วยทางอากาศ
