Somatotopy หมายถึงความเชื่อมต่อกันจุดต่อจุดระหว่างเขตหนึ่งในร่างกายกับจุด ๆ หนึ่งในระบบประสาทกลาง โดยทั่ว ๆ ไปแล้ว จุดหนึ่งในร่างกายจะตรงกับอีกจุดหนึ่งในคอร์เทกซ์รับความรู้สึกทางกายปฐมภูมิ (postcentral gyrus ) ซึ่งทั่ว ๆ ไปปรากฏเป็นแผนที่ sensory homunculus (homunculus แปลว่า คนจำลอง หรือคนเล็ก) ซึ่งมีการจัดเรียงส่วนต่าง ๆ ของร่างกาย คือ เขตต่าง ๆ เช่นรยางค์ (ดูรยางค์บน และรยางค์ล่าง ) นิ้วมือนิ้วเท้า องคชาต และใบหน้ามีส่วนของตนเองในคอร์เทกซ์รับความรู้สึก (somatosensory cortex) และเขตร่างกายที่สามารถควบคุมได้อย่างละเอียด (เช่นนิ้วมือ) ก็จะมีส่วนสัมพันธ์ในคอร์เทกซ์ที่ใหญ่กว่า เปรียบเทียบกับเขตร่างกายที่ควบคุมได้อย่างหยาบ ๆ (เช่นลำตัว) ก็จะมีส่วนสัมพันธ์ในคอร์เทกซ์ที่เล็กกว่า และก็ยังมีเขตอื่น ๆ ด้วย เช่นอวัยวะภายใน (viscera) ที่ไม่มีเขตสัมพันธ์ใน postcentral gyrus
