นับแต่สิ้นเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2557 เกิดการเดินขบวนโดยกลุ่มนิยมรัสเซีย คลั่งชาติและต่อต้านรัฐบาลเกิดขึ้นในนครหลักทั่วภาคตะวันออกและภาคใต้ของประเทศยูเครน อันเป็นผลจากขบวนการยูโรไมดานและการปฏิวัติยูเครน พ.ศ. 2557 สำนักข่าวรัสเซียหลายสำนักใช้คำว่า "รัสเซียนสปริง" อธิบายคลื่นการเดินขบวนเหล่านี้ ในความไม่สงบขั้นแรก ไครเมียถูกสหพันธรัฐรัสเซียผนวกหลังวิกฤตการณ์ในภูมิภาค การแทรกแซงทางทหารของรัสเซียและการลงประชามติซึ่งนานาประเทศวิจารณ์ การประท้วงในแคว้นโดเนตสค์และแคว้นลูฮันสค์ทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นเป็นการก่อการกำเริบแบ่งแยกดินแดนด้วยอาวุธ ซึ่งทำให้รัฐบาลยูเครนเปิดฉากการรุกโต้ตอบทางทหารต่อผู้ก่อการกำเริบ
