ประวัติศาสตร์ แรกเริ่มนั้นพื้นที่บริเวณนี้ถูกแบ่งเขตออกเป็น 3 จังหวัด คือ โอวาริ มิกาวะ และโฮะ ต่อมาในช่วงสมัยไทกะ จังหวัดมิกาวะและจังหวัดโฮะถูกผนวกเข้าเป็นจังหวัดเดียวกัน จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2414 หลังจากมีการเลิกล้มระบอบศักดินา พื้นที่ของจังหวัดโอวารินอกจากส่วนที่อยู่ในคาบสมุทรชิตะได้ถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นเป็น จังหวัดนาโงยะ และจังหวัดมิกาวะได้ถูกผนวกรวมเข้ากับส่วนที่คาบสมุทรชิตะ แล้วก่อตั้งขึ้นเป็นจังหวัดนูกาตะ ต่อมาจังหวัดนาโงยะถูกเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นจังหวัดไอจิในเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. 2415 และได้ผนวกเอาจังหวัดมิกาวะเข้าไปด้วยในวันที่ 27 พฤศจิกายน ในปีเดียวกัน
สภาพทางภูมิศาสตร์ จังหวัดไอจิตั้งอยู่ในตำแหน่งใกล้จุดศูนย์กลางของเกาะฮนชู ตัวจังหวัดหันหน้าออกสู่อ่าวอิเซะและอ่าวมิกาวะทางทิศใต้ มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับจังหวัดชิซูโอกะทางทิศตะวันออก จังหวัดนางาโนะทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ จังหวัดกิฟุทางทิศเหนือ และจังหวัดมิเอะทางทิศตะวันตก มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมด 5,153.81 ตารางกิโลเมตร คิดเป็นอัตราส่วน 1.36% ของพื้นผิวทั้งหมดของประเทศญี่ปุ่น จุดที่อยู่สูงที่สุดในจังหวัดคือ ภูเขาจาอูซุ มีความสูง 1,415 เมตรเหนือระดับน้ำทะเล
พื้นที่ด้านตะวันตกของจังหวัดเป็นเขตเมืองนาโงยะ ซึ่งเป็นเมืองที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับที่ 4 ของญี่ปุ่น ส่วนพื้นที่ด้านตะวันออกของจังหวัดจะมีความหนาแน่นของประชากรค่อนข้างน้อยกว่า แต่ก็ยังเป็นที่ตั้งของศูนย์กลางหลักทางอุตสาหกรรมอีกหลายแห่ง
สถิติประชากร ในปี พ.ศ. 2544 ประชากรของจังหวัดไอจิประกอบไปด้วยเพศชาย 50.03% และเพศหญิง 49.97% มีชาวต่างชาติอาศัยอยู่ 139,540 คน คิดเป็นประมาณ 2% ของจำนวนประชากรทั้งหมดในจังหวัด
