ชาลส์ ดาร์วิน

ชาลส์ โรเบิร์ต ดาวินส์ (อังกฤษ: Charles Robert Darwin) เป็นนักธรรมชาติวิทยาชาวอังกฤษ ผู้ทำการปฏิวัติความเชื่อเดิม ๆ เกี่ยวกับที่มาของสิ่งมีชีวิต และเสนอทฤษฎีซึ่งเป็นทั้งรากฐานของทฤษฎีวิวัฒนาการสมัยใหม่ และหลักการพื้นฐานของกลไกการคัดเลือกโดยธรรมชาติ (natural selection) เขาตีพิมพ์ข้อเสนอของเขาในปี ค.ศ. 1859 ในหนังสือชื่อ The Origin of Species (กำเนิดของสรรพชีวิต) ซึ่งเป็นผลงานที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดของเขา ผลงานนี้ปฏิเสธแนวคิดทางวิทยาศาสตร์ทั้งหมดที่เคยมีมาก่อนหน้านี้เกี่ยวกับการกลายพันธุ์ของสปีชีส์ ช่วงคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1870 ชุมชนวิทยาศาสตร์และสาธารณชนส่วนมากจึงยอมรับทฤษฎีวิวัฒนาการในฐานะที่เป็นความจริง อย่างไรก็ดี ยังมีคำอธิบายที่เป็นไปได้ทางอื่นๆ อีก และยังไม่มีการยอมรับทฤษฎีนี้เป็นเอกฉันท์ว่าเป็นกลไกพื้นฐานของวิวัฒนาการ ตราบจนกระทั่งเกิดแนวคิดการสังเคราะห์วิวัฒนาการยุคใหม่ (modern evolutionary synthesis) ขึ้นในช่วงคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1930-1950 การค้นพบของดาร์วินยังถือเป็นรูปแบบการรวบรวมทางทฤษฏีของศาสตร์เกี่ยวกับชีวิต ที่อธิบายถึงความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพของสิ่งมีชีวิต

ความสนใจเกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติตั้งแต่วัยเด็กทำให้ดาร์วินไม่สนใจการศึกษาวิชาแพทย์ในมหาวิทยาลัยเอดินเบอระเลย แต่กลับหันไปช่วยการตรวจสอบสัตว์น้ำที่ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลัง เมื่อศึกษาที่มหาวิทยาลัยเคมบริดจ์ได้ช่วยกระตุ้นความหลงใหลในวิทยาศาสตร์ธรรมชาติมากขึ้น การเดินทางออกไปยังท้องทะเลเป็นเวลา 5 ปีกับเรือบีเกิล (HMS Beagle) และโดยเฉพาะการเฝ้าสำรวจที่หมู่เกาะกาลาปากอส เป็นทั้งแรงบันดาลใจ และให้ข้อมูลจำนวนมาก ซึ่งเขานำมาใช้ในทฤษฎีของเขา ผลงานตีพิมพ์เรื่อง การผจญภัยกับบีเกิล (The Voyage of the Beagle) ทำให้เขามีชื่อเสียงในฐานะนักเขียน

ชาลส์ โรเบิร์ต ดาร์วิน เกิดที่เมืองชรูซบรี ชรอพเชอร์ ประเทศอังกฤษ เมื่อวันที่ 12 กุมภาพันธ์ ค.ศ. 1809 ที่บ้านของตระกูล คือเดอะเมานท์ เขาเป็นบุตรคนที่ห้าในจำนวนทั้งหมด 6 คนของครอบครัวที่มีฐานะร่ำรวยและมีชื่อเสียงครอบครัวหนึ่งของอังกฤษ บิดาของดาร์วินเป็นนายแพทย์ชื่อว่า โรเบิร์ต วอริง ดาร์วิน มารดาชื่อ ซูซานนา ดาร์วิน (สกุลเดิม เวดจ์วูด) เขาเป็นหลานของเอรัสมัส ดาร์วิน กับ โจสิอาห์ เวดจ์วูด ทั้งสองตระกูลนี้เป็นคริสตชนยูนิทาเรียน (Unitarian) ผู้เคร่งครัดที่เชื่อว่ามีพระเจ้าเพียงองค์เดียว แต่ตัวโรเบิร์ต ดาร์วิน นั้นเป็นคนหัวเสรี และให้ชาลส์บุตรชายไปรับศีลในโบสถ์ของนิกายแองกลิกัน แต่ชาลส์กับพี่น้องก็ไปเข้าโบสถ์ของยูนิทาริสต์กับมารดา เมื่อชาลส์อายุ 8 ขวบ ได้หลงใหลในประวัติศาสตร์ธรรมชาติและเริ่มสะสมสิ่งต่างๆ เมื่อเขาเข้าโรงเรียนเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1817 มารดาของเขาเสียชีวิตเมื่อเดือนกรกฎาคมปีนั้น นับจากเดือนกันยายน ค.ศ. 1818 เขาก็ไปอยู่ประจำที่โรงเรียนซรูซบรีอันเป็นโรงเรียนนิกายแองกลิกัน กับพี่ชายของตนคือ เอรัสมัส อัลวีย์ ดาร์วิน

ช่วงฤดูร้อนปี ค.ศ. 1825 ดาร์วินใช้เวลาเป็นผู้ช่วยแพทย์ฝึกหัด โดยช่วยบิดาของตนในการรักษาคนยากจนในชรอพเชอร์ ก่อนจะเข้าเรียนวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเอดินเบอระ พร้อมกับเอรัสมัสพี่ชาย ในเดือนตุลาคม ค.ศ. 1825 แต่ดาร์วินกลับเห็นชั่วโมงบรรยายเป็นสิ่งน่าเบื่อ ทั้งไม่ชอบการผ่าตัด จึงไม่เอาใจใส่การเรียน เขาเรียนวิธีสตาร์ฟสัตว์ตายจาก จอห์น เอ็ดมอนสโตน ทาสผิวดำที่ได้เป็นไทซึ่งร่วมงานอยู่กับชาลส์ วอเทอร์ทันในป่าดงดิบตอนใต้ของอเมริกา และมักจะนั่งคุยกับ "ชายผู้เฉลียวฉลาดและน่าคบหา" คนนี้อยู่เป็นประจำ

เมื่อขึ้นปีสอง ดาร์วินเข้าร่วมสมาคมพลิเนียน (Plinian Society) ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มศึกษาด้านประวัติศาสตร์ธรรมชาติในมหาวิทยาลัยเอดินเบอระ เขาช่วยเหลือโรเบิร์ต เอ็ดมอนด์ แกรนท์ ในการสำรวจศึกษาลักษณะทางกายภาพและวงจรชีวิตของสัตว์ทะเลที่ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลังในเฟิร์ธออฟฟอร์ธ วันที่ 27 มีนาคม ค.ศ. 1827 เขานำเสนอการค้นพบของตนต่อสมาคมพลิเนียนว่า จุดสีดำที่พบในเปลือกหอยนางรมนั้นเป็นไข่ของปลิง วันหนึ่ง แกรนท์ยกย่องแนวคิดเรื่องวิวัฒนาการของ ชอง-แบบติสต์ ลามาร์ค (Jean-Baptiste Lamarck) ดาร์วินถึงกับตะลึง แต่ก่อนหน้านั้นเขาเคยอ่านแนวคิดคล้ายคลึงกันนี้จากเอรัสมัสผู้เป็นปู่ และเห็นว่ามันไม่ต่างกัน ดาร์วินค่อนข้างเบื่อหน่ายกับวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ธรรมชาติของโรเบิร์ต เจมสัน ซึ่งวุ่นวายกับธรณีวิทยา รวมถึงการโต้แย้งกันระหว่างทฤษฎีการเกิดของน้ำ (Neptunism) กับทฤษฎีการเกิดพลูตอน (Plutonism) เขาได้เรียนรู้การจัดอันดับของพืช และได้ช่วยงานด้านการเก็บรักษาในรอยัลมิวเซียม ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในยุโรปในเวลานั้น

การไม่เอาใจใส่การเรียนแพทย์เช่นนี้ทำให้บิดาของเขาไม่พอใจ ภายหลังจึงส่งเขาไปยังวิทยาลัยไครสต์ มหาวิทยาลัยเคมบริดจ์ เพื่อศึกษาในคณะอักษรศาสตร์สำหรับการเตรียมตัวเข้าบวชในนิกายแองกลิกัน ดาร์วินสอบไทรพอส ไม่ผ่าน จึงสำเร็จการศึกษามาด้วยปริญญาระดับปกติ เมื่อเดือนมกราคม ค.ศ. 1828 ดาร์วินชอบท่องเที่ยวและกีฬายิงปืนมากกว่าการเล่าเรียน ญาติคนหนึ่งของเขาคือ วิลเลียม ดาร์วิน ฟ็อกซ์ จึงแนะนำให้เขาไปเข้าร่วมชมรมสะสมแมลงเต่าทอง ซึ่งดาร์วินตั้งหน้าตั้งตาร่วมกิจกรรมอย่างกระตือรือร้น จนงานค้นพบของเขาได้รับการตีพิมพ์ใน Illustrations of British entomology ของเจมส์ ฟรังซิส สตีเฟน ดาร์วินกลายเป็นเพื่อนสนิทและผู้ติดตามของศาสตราจารย์ด้านพฤกษศาสตร์ จอห์น สตีเฟน เฮนสโลว์ และได้พบปะกับนักธรรมชาติวิทยาชั้นแนวหน้าหลายคน จนกระทั่งใกล้ถึงการสอบปลายภาค ดาร์วินจึงหันมาสนใจการเรียนแล้วมาชื่นชอบงานเขียนของวิลเลียม พาลีย์ Evidences of Christianity ดาร์วินทำคะแนนได้ดีในการสอบไล่ครั้งสุดท้ายในเดือนมกราคม ค.ศ. 1831 โดยได้ลำดับที่ 10 จาก 178 คนที่อยู่ในหลักสูตรปริญญาปกติ

ดาร์วินยังต้องอยู่เคมบริดจ์จนกระทั่งเดือนมิถุนายน เขาศึกษางานของพาลีย์ เรื่อง Natural Theology ซึ่งทำให้เกิดข้อโต้แย้งเรื่องการออกแบบธรรมชาติจากสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ โดยอธิบายถึงการปรับตัวของธรรมชาติว่าเป็นการกระทำของพระผู้เป็นเจ้าโดยผ่านกฎของธรรมชาติ เขาอ่านหนังสือใหม่ของจอห์น เฮอร์เชล ซึ่งอธิบายจุดประสงค์สูงสุดของปรัชญาทางธรรมชาติด้วยการทำความเข้าใจกับกฎเกณฑ์เหล่านั้นผ่านการให้เหตุผลโดยอุปนัยโดยมีพื้นฐานจากการสังเกต และงานเขียนของอเล็กซานเดอร์ ฟอน ฮัมโบลท์ เรื่อง Personal Narrative เกี่ยวกับการเดินทางของวิทยาศาสตร์ ด้วยแรงบันดาลใจจากภายใน ดาร์วินวางแผนจะไปเยือนเตเนรีเฟกับเพื่อนร่วมชั้นหลังจากจบการศึกษา เพื่อไปศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ธรรมชาติในบริเวณภูมิภาคนั้น ระหว่างเตรียมการ เขาเข้าเรียนหลักสูตรธรณีวิทยาของอดัม เซดจ์วิค จากนั้นใช้เวลาครึ่งเดือนในช่วงฤดูร้อนเพื่อทำแผนที่ในเวลส์ และอีก 1 สัปดาห์กับเพื่อนนักเรียนในบาร์มอธ หลังจากนั้นเมื่อเขากลับมาบ้าน จึงได้รับจดหมายฉบับหนึ่งจากเฮนสโลว์เสนอให้ดาร์วินเป็นนักธรรมชาติวิทยา (แม้ยังเรียนไม่จบ) โดยใช้ทุนวิจัยของตนเอง ร่วมกับกัปตันโรเบิร์ต ฟิตซ์รอย ในการเดินทางร่วมกับเรือหลวงบีเกิลที่กำลังจะออกเดินทางไปยังชายฝั่งอเมริกาใต้ภายในเวลา 4 สัปดาห์ บิดาของเขาไม่เห็นด้วยกับการต้องออกเดินทางไปถึง 2 ปี ด้วยเห็นว่าเป็นการเสียเวลาเปล่า แต่จากการเกลี้ยกล่อมของ โจซิอาห์ เวดจ์วูด ผู้เป็นน้องเขย จึงได้ยินยอมให้ดาร์วินร่วมเดินทางได้

การเดินทางเริ่มขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 27 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 1831 และใช้เวลาเดินทางรวมทั้งสิ้น 5 ปี ขณะที่เรือหลวงบีเกิลทำการสำรวจและทำแผนที่ชายฝั่งอเมริกาใต้นั้น ดาร์วินใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่อยู่บนฝั่งเพื่อสำรวจด้านธรณีวิทยาและเก็บสะสมตัวอย่างสำหรับการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ สมดังที่ที่ฟิตซ์รอยตั้งใจไว้ เขาเขียนบันทึกผลการสังเกตการณ์และการคาดเดาทางทฤษฎีอย่างละเอียด ระหว่างช่วงหยุดพัก ดาร์วินส่งของตัวอย่างกลับไปยังเคมบริดจ์ พร้อมกับจดหมายซึ่งมีสำเนาบันทึกงานเขียน การเดินทางของบีเกิล (The Voyage of the Beagle) ไปให้ครอบครัวด้วย ดาร์วินค่อนข้างเชี่ยวชาญด้านธรณีวิทยา รวมถึงการสะสมเต่าทอง และการผ่าตัดศึกษาสัตว์ทะเล แต่ในสาขาอื่นๆ แล้วเขาแทบไม่รู้อะไรเลย และเก็บตัวอย่างเอาไว้เพื่อส่งต่อไปให้ผู้เชี่ยวชาญอื่นตรวจสอบ ดาร์วินเมาคลื่นมาก แต่กระนั้นก็ยังเขียนหนังสือมากมายขณะอยู่ในเรือ งานเขียนเชิงสัตววิทยาส่วนใหญ่เกี่ยวกับสัตว์ทะเลที่ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลัง เริ่มจากแพลงตอนซึ่งเก็บได้ระหว่างช่วงทะเลสงบ

การริเริ่มทฤษฎีวิวัฒนาการ

ทฤษฎีวิวัฒนาการ คือแนวคิดของนักวิทยาศาสตร์ที่พยายามจะอธิบายว่าวิวัฒนาการมีจริงและเกิดขึ้น ได้อย่างไรโดยอาศัยหลักฐานทางด้านต่างๆประกอบและยืนยันแนวโน้มของวิวัฒนาการมีดังนี้

1. เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ไปข้างหน้าไม่ย้อนกลับ มีแนวโน้มการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากแบบ ง่าย ๆ เป็นซับซ้อนจากแบบโบราณเป็นแบบก้าวหน้าและจากแบบทั่วไปเป็นแบบจำเพาะเจาะจงเช่น การลดจำนวนของกระดูก ก้นกบหรือการเชื่อมของ กลีบดอกเป็นต้น

2. ลักษณะทางพันธุกรรมที่ไม่เหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมจะถูกกำจัด หรือสูญหายไป

ช่วงสุดท้ายของชีวิต

หนังสือเล่มสุดท้ายก่อนที่ดาร์วินจะเสียชีวิตในวันที่ 19 เมษายน ค.ศ. 1882 ศพของเขาถูกฝังอยู่ที่วิหารเวสต์มินสเตอร์ ผลงานหนังสือที่ตีพิมพ์ของดาร์วินเป็นผลงานที่มีประโยชน์อย่างมากทั้งทางชีววิทยา และมานุษยวิทยา โดยเฉพาะทฤษฎีวิวัฒนาการถือได้ว่าเป็นก้าวสำคัญในวงการชีววิทยา
