ทิเบต เป็นรัฐเอกราชโดยพฤตินัยระหว่าง ค.ศ. 1912 ถึง ค.ศ. 1951 ผู้ปกครองคือทะไลลามะการปกครองคือศาสนาพุทธโดยเทวาธิปไตยแบบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ และมีสถานะเป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งของสาธารณรัฐจีน

ทิเบตเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของราชวงศ์ชิงมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง จนกระทั่งเกิดการปฏิวัติซินไฮ่ภายหลังจาการล่มสลายของราชวงศ์ชิง ในปี ค.ศ. 1912 เมื่อรัฐบาลเฉพาะกาลแห่งสาธารณรัฐจีนแทนที่ราชวงศ์ชิงในฐานะรัฐบาลของจีนและได้ลงนามในสนธิสัญญากับราชวงศ์ชิงที่จะสืบทอดดินแดนทั้งหมดของราชวงศ์มาเป็นสาธารณรัฐใหม่ทำให้ทิเบตมีสถานะเป็น"รัฐในอารักขา" ต่อมาในสมัยรัฐบาลชาตินิยมแห่งสาธารณรัฐจีนได้ยกระดับให้ทิเบตเป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งของสาธารณรัฐจีน

ทิเบตในช่วงศตวรรษที่ 20 ยังไม่มีการเลิกทาสเพราะยังมียุติตามมติชนชั้นอยู่จนกระทั่งถึง ค.ศ. 1951 มีข้อตกลงสันติภาพ 17 ข้อ
