ผู้ซุ่มอ่านข่าว

ในวัฒนธรรมอินเทอร์เน็ต ผู้ซุ่มอ่านข่าว (อังกฤษ: lurker) โดยปรกติแล้วเป็นสมาชิกของประชาคมออนไลน์ที่เฝ้าติดตามความเคลื่อนไหวในประชาคมนั้น แต่ไม่แสดงออกอย่างเป็นกิจจะลักษณะนัก ในบรรดาสมาชิกของประชาคมออนไลน์แต่ละแห่งมักมีผู้ซุ่มอยู่จำนวนมาก การซุ่มอาจเป็นไปเพื่อเรียนรู้กฎระเบียบของประชาคมก่อนเข้าร่วมอย่างเปิดเผย ช่วยให้เข้าสังคมได้ดีขึ้นเมื่อออกจากการซุ่ม อย่างไรก็ดี การขาดการติดต่อกับผู้อื่นในระหว่างซุ่มนั้นอาจทำให้ผู้ซุ่มเหงาใจหรือเฉื่อยชาได้

ในภาษาอังกฤษยังมีคำอื่นใช้เรียกผู้ซุ่มอีกหลายคำ เช่น browsers, read-only participants, non-public participants, legitimate peripheral participants หรือ vicarious learners

ความเป็นมา

นับแต่เริ่มมีการคมนาคมโดยใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เป็นสื่อขึ้นมา ก็มีการซุ่มเกิดขึ้นในหมู่สมาชิกประชาคมแต่ละแห่งแล้ว ส่วนคำว่า "lurk" (ซุ่ม) ในภาษาอังกฤษนั้นปรากฏว่า ใช้เป็นครั้งแรกในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 14 คำนี้เดิมหมายถึงบุคคลที่ซ่อนตัวอยู่โดยมีเจตนาไม่พึงประสงค์ ต่อมาในกลางคริสต์ทศวรรษที่ 1890 ก็เริ่มมีการใช้คำ "lurk" ในระบบอินเทอร์เน็ตเมื่อระบบกระดานข่าวเกิดเป็นที่นิยมขึ้นมา กระดานข่าวดังกล่าวมักเข้าถึงได้ผ่านสายโทรศัพท์ที่บุคคลโทรศัพท์ไปอัปโหลดไฟล์หรือเขียนเนื้อความเผยแพร่ แต่ผู้ซุ่มอ่านข่าวเงียบ ๆ มักส่งผลให้สายโทรศัพท์ไม่ว่างเป็นเวลานาน และไม่เกิดสิ่งใหม่ขึ้นบนกระดานข่าว ผู้ดูแลระบบจึงมักมองเป็นพฤติกรรมลบ แล้วปิดกั้นผู้ซุ่มจากกระดานข่าวนั้นเสีย

ปัจจุบัน มีมุมมองทั้งดีและไม่ดีต่อผู้ซุ่ม ประชาคมส่วนใหญ่ยังคงถือว่า ผู้ซุ่มเป็น "ผู้บริโภคโดยไม่ยอมเสียเงิน" (free rider) เพราะเขาเหล่านั้นได้รับประโยชน์ไปโดยไม่สร้างประโยชน์ตอบแทน แต่ประชาคมบางแห่งก็ชี้ชวนให้หน้าใหม่คอยซุ่มไว้ก่อน เพราะจะได้ใช้เวลาเรียนรู้วัฒนธรรมของประชาคมนั้น ๆ ทำความเข้าใจบรรทัดฐานในประชาคม และคุ้นเคยกับขาประจำมากขึ้น นอกจากนี้ ทัศนคติแง่ดีเกี่ยวกับผู้ซุ่มยังเกิดขึ้นเพราะผู้ซุ่มช่วยเพิ่มจำนวนผู้ชม

การสืบหาหลักแหล่งผู้ซุ่มนั้นทำได้ยากในประชาคมที่ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เป็นสื่อ เพราะบทบาทหลักของผู้ซุ่ม คือ อ่านอย่างเดียว จึงไม่มีร่องรอยอันใดให้ใช้ตรวจสอบได้ อนึ่ง ในประชาคมแบบโอเพนซอร์ส (open source) นั้น มีการประเมินว่า มีผู้ซุ่มอยู่ราวร้อยละ 50 ถึง 90 ของผู้ชมทั้งหมด ไม่ว่า ณ เวลาใดก็ตาม สถิติอันนี้สอดคล้องหลักการเรื่อง 90-9-1 (ขึ้นอยู่กับประชาคมแต่ละแห่ง)

ทำไมต้องซุ่ม

เหตุผลที่ซุ่มนั้นมีหลายประการ ผู้ซุ่มส่วนใหญ่รับว่า ที่ซุ่มเพราะเห็นว่า เพียงติดตามอยู่เฉย ๆ ก็พอแล้ว บุคคลยังเลือกซุ่มเพื่อคอยสังเกตตัวอย่างไว้เป็นแนวประพฤติในโอกาสที่เข้ามีส่วนร่วมอย่างเปิดเผยแล้ว จะได้ไม่สร้างข้อความซ้ำซ้อน หรือเข้าใจหัวข้อพูดคุยได้ดีขึ้น เป็นต้น อนึ่ง ผู้ซุ่มบางคนเห็นว่า จำเป็นต้องเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับประชาคมนั้น ๆ เสียก่อน นี้จึงเป็นเหตุผลที่มีผู้ซุ่มอยู่ในส่วนสนับสนุนทางเทคนิคมากเป็นสองเท่าของผู้ซุ่มในส่วนอื่น ๆ

นักวิจัยเห็นว่า พฤติกรรมต่าง ๆ ในสภากาแฟออนไลน์ เช่น การอ่าน การเขียน และการควบคุมเว็บไซต์ เกิดจากแรงจูงใจต่าง ๆ กันไป ผู้ซุ่มโดยแท้นั้นมักมีแรงจูงใจเป็นความคิดเห็นที่ว่า ประชาคมแห่งนั้นเป็นสถานที่เดียวที่เขาจะพบเจอเนื้อหาดังประสงค์ ขณะที่ผู้ควบคุมเว็บไซต์และผู้เขียนมักมีแรงจูงใจเป็นหน้าที่หรือความรู้สึกซึ่งติดมากับประชาคมนั้น ๆ
