วงศ์แพนด้าแดง เป็นวงศ์ของสัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมในอันดับสัตว์กินเนื้อวงศ์หนึ่ง ใช้ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Ailuridae (/ไอ-เลอ-ริ-ดี/) ซึ่งมีเพียงสัตว์ชนิดเดียวเท่านั้นที่อยู่ในวงศ์นี้ คือ แพนด้าแดง ที่พบกระจายพันธุ์ในป่าตามแนวเทือกเขาหิมาลัยของเอเชียตะวันออกจนถึงเอเชียใต้
เดิมทีนักวิทยาศาสตร์ คือ จอร์จส์ คูเวียร์ ได้จัดให้แพนด้าแดงอยู่ในวงศ์เดียวกันกับแรคคูน คือ Procyonidae ในปี ค.ศ. 1825 ด้วยเห็นว่าแพนด้าแดง มีลักษณะทางกายภาพหลายอย่างที่เหมือนกับแรคคูน เช่น ลักษณะลำตัวสั้น มีหางยาว มีรูปหน้า และลวดลายคล้ายกับแรคคูน นอกจากนั้นยังมีพฤติกรรมการออกหากินในช่วงเวลากลางคืน และใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่อาศัยอยู่บนต้นไม้คล้ายกับแรคคูนอีกด้วย หรือแม้แต่บางคนก็จัดให้อยู่วงศ์เดียวกันกับหมี คือ Ursidae
อย่างไรก็ตามเมื่อมีการศึกษาลงไปถึงระดับโมเลกุลของสารพันธุกรรม ได้แก่ การหาลำดับเบสของดีเอ็นเอ และการทดสอบเปรียบเทียบตำแหน่งของเบสในสิ่งมีชีวิตเพื่อจำแนกเป็นสายวิวัฒนาการ ทำให้ทราบว่าแพนด้าแดงมีสารพันธุกรรมที่มีความแตกต่างจากแรคคูน และมีสายวิวัฒนาการแยกออกมาจากสายวิวัฒนาการของแรคคูนมาเป็นเวลานานกว่า 30 หรือ 40 ล้านปีแล้ว จึงได้จำแนกแพนด้าแดงออกมาจากวงศ์ Procyonidae และจัดอยู่ในวงศ์เฉพาะคือ วงศ์ Ailuridae
ปัจจุบันแพนด้าแดงแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ชนิดย่อย คือ Ailurus fulgens fulgens ซึ่งมีขนาดตัวเล็ก และขนที่ใบหน้ามีสีจาง ส่วนใหญ่อาศัยอยู่ทางตอนเหนือของประเทศอินเดียในรัฐอัสสัมและสิขิม หรือประเทศภูฎาน, ประเทศเนปาล และบางส่วนของประเทศจีน ส่วนอีกชนิดย่อยหนึ่งคือ Ailurus fulgens styani มีขนาดตัวที่ใหญ่และมีลายที่หน้าสีเข้มกว่าชนิดย่อยแรก ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่อาศัยอยู่ในประเทศจีนแถบมณฑลยูนาน และเทือกเขาในมณฑลเสฉวน และทางตอนเหนือของประเทศพม่า อาหารหลักคือใบไผ่ บางครั้งอาจกินลูกสน, รากไม้, เห็ด , ไข่นก หรือลูกนก เป็นต้น ชอบออกหากินเวลาใกล้ค่ำ อาศัยอยู่บนต้นไม้เป็นส่วนใหญ่
สมาชิกในวงศ์นี้ได้สูญพันธุ์ ไปเกือบหมดแล้ว ตั้งแต่ในยุคน้ำแข็ง เดิมเคยพบกระจายเป็นวงกว้างตั้งแต่ยุโรปจนถึงเอเชีย จึงทำให้แพนด้าแดง ซึ่งเป็นสมาชิกเพียงหนึ่งเดียวที่ในวงศ์นี้ที่ยังดำรงเผ่าพันธุ์อยู่จนถึงปัจจุบันเป็นฟอสซิลที่มีชีวิต
