แบคทีเรีย

แบคทีเรีย หรือ บัคเตรี (อังกฤษ: bacteria /bækˈtɪəriə/ ( ฟังเสียง); เอกพจน์ bacterium) เป็นเซลล์ประเภทหนึ่ง ประกอบขึ้นจากโดเมนขนาดใหญ่ของจุลชีพที่เป็นโพรแคริโอต โดยมากมีความยาวไม่กี่ไมโครเมตร แบคทีเรียมีรูปร่างที่หลากหลาย ตั้งแต่ทรงกลมไปจนถึงแบบแท่งและแบบเกลียว แบคทีเรียเป็นหนึ่งในรูปแบบแรก ๆ ของชีวิตที่ปรากฏขึ้นบนโลก และพบได้ในสิ่งแวดล้อมเกือบทุกรูปแบบ แบคทีเรียอาศัยอยู่ในดิน, แหล่งน้ำ, น้ำพุร้อนที่มีความเป็นกรด, ขยะกัมมันตรังสี, และชีวมณฑลส่วนลึกของแผ่นเปลือกโลก นอกจากนี้ยังดำรงความสัมพันธ์แบบอยู่ร่วมกันและแบบปรสิตกับพืชและสัตว์ แบคทีเรียส่วนมากยังไม่ถูกอธิบายคุณลักษณะ และมีเพียงร้อยละ 27 จากไฟลัมแบคทีเรียทั้งหมดที่สามารถเติบโตในห้องปฏิบัติการณ์ สาขาวิชาที่ศึกษาแบคทีเรียรู้จักกันในชื่อ แบคทีเรียวิทยา (bacteriology) อันเป็นสาขาหนึ่งของจุลชีววิทยา
