A necessidade de um edifício destinado a Sé surgiu em 1545 quando D. João III apoiou a criação do Bispado de Leiria, dando a sua jurisdição ao reformador do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz de Coimbra, Frei Brás de Barros, primeiro bispo da Diocese.
Em 1546, teve início a construção, segundo um projecto do arquitecto Afonso Álvares, que optou pelo estilo maneirista para o exterior, conservando um interior harmonioso com três naves da mesma altura, de inspiração renascentista tardia. A igreja foi sagrada apenas em 1574. Algumas alterações foram efectuadas nos séculos seguintes graças à acção episcopal, salientando-se a que sucedeu ao terramoto de 1755 e que acentuou a sobriedade da fachada.
No interior, destaca-se a capela-mor do séc. XVII, da autoria de Baltasar Álvares e Frei João Turriano, em estilo maneirista. O retábulo enquadra pinturas de Simão Rodrigues, com episódios da vida da Virgem Maria. Dois orgãos de grandes dimensões em estilo barroco que sobrepõem dois cadeiras laterais completam a decoração.
No séc. XVIII, aquando das obras na fachada, D. Frei Miguel Bolhões e Sousa mandou construir a torre sineira um pouco afastada do edifício, sobre a antiga torre medieval das Portas do Sol que marcava a entrada Sul na muralha do Castelo. <a href="https://www.visitportugal.com/pt-pt/content/s%C3%A9-catedral-de-leiria" rel="nofollow">www.visitportugal.com/pt-pt/content/s%C3%A9-catedral-de-l...</a>
