ไฟโตอเล็กซิน

ไฟโตอเล็กซิน (Phytoalexin)เป็นสารอินทรีย์มวลโมเลกุลต่ำที่พืชสร้างขึ้นหลังการติดเชื้อ ตรวจพบมากมายหลายชนิด แต่สารชนิดนี้ไม่ได้พบในพืชทุกกลุ่ม ส่วนใหญ่พบในพืชตระกูลถั่วพืชวงศ์มะเขือ ส่วนพืชตระกูลหญ้ามีรายงานว่าพบเฉพาะในข้าว ข้าวโอ๊ต ข้าวฟ่าง แต่ไม่พบในข้าวโพด

การสังเคราะห์ไฟโตอเล็กซินเกิดในบริเวณที่ติดเชื้อ และสะสมมากในเซลล์ที่ตายแล้ว ไฟโตอเล็กซินมีฤทธิ์ฆ่าทั้งเชื้อก่อโรคและเซลล์พืชเองเพื่อสกัดไม่ให้โรคลุกลามต่อไป
