กลุ่มภาษาเซมิติกตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ

กลุ่มภาษาเซมิติกตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ (Northwest Semitic languages) เป็นกลุ่มย่อยของกลุ่มภาษาเซมิติกตะวันตก มีผู้พูดประมาณ 8 ล้านคนในปัจจุบัน แบ่งได้เป็น 3 สาขา คือ ภาษายูการิติก (ตายแล้ว) ภาษาคานาอันไนต์ (รวมภาษาฮีบรู) และภาษาอราเมอิก บางครั้งรวมกลุ่มภาษานี้เข้ากับภาษาอาหรับแล้วจัดเป็นกลุ่มภาษาเซมิติกกลาง

ภาษายูการิติกที่ตายแล้วเป็นหลักฐานรุ่นแรกสุดของกลุ่มภาษานี้ ภาษายูการิติกไม่มีเสียง /dˤ/ (ḍ) แต่แทนที่ด้วยเสียง /sˤ/ (ṣ) (ลักษณะเดียวกับที่ปรากฏในภาษาอัคคาเดีย) เสียงนี้กลายเป็นเสียง /ʕ/ ในภาษาอราเมอิก (ในภาษาอราเมอิกโบราณ เสียงนี้เขียนด้วยอักษรกอฟ) ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่าภาษายูการิติกไม่ได้เป็นภาษาต้นแบบของกลุ่มนี้ ตัวอย่างการเปลี่ยนเสียงนี้พบได้ในคำว่า “โลก” : ภาษายูการิติก /ʔarsˤ/ (’arṣ), ภาษาฮีบรู /ʔɛrɛsˤ/ (’ereṣ) และภาษาอราเมอิก /ʔarʕaː/ (’ar‘ā’) ภาษายูการิติกต่างจากภาษาในกลุ่มเดียวกันตรงที่ว่ายังคงมีคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย /w/ ในขณะที่ภาษาที่เหลือแทนที่ด้วย /y/
