ภาษายูการิต

ภาษายูการิต เป็นภาษาที่พบหลักฐานในจารึกที่พบในบริเวณนครรัฐยูการิต ที่ขุดค้นพบในประเทศซีเรีย เป็นภาษาที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับภาษาฮีบรู และมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับศาสนายูดายและศาสนาโบราณอื่น ๆ ในบริเวณนั้น เป็นภาษากลุ่มเซมิติก เขียนด้วยอักษรรูปลิ่มที่ต่างจากอักษรรูปลิ่มอื่นเพราะใช้แทนเสียงพยัญชนะ โดยมีพยัญชนะ 22 ตัว พบจารึกอักษรนี้ในช่วง 857–657 ปีก่อนพุทธศักราช นครรัฐยูการิตถูกทำลายเมื่อราว 637–627 ปีก่อนพุทธศักราช

ลักษณะทางไวยากรณ์ของภาษายูการิตใกล้เคียงกับภาษาในกลุ่มภาษาเซมิติกมากโดยฉพาะในภาษาอาหรับคลาสสิก และภาษาอัคคาเดียน มีเพศทางไวยากรณ์สองเพศคือเพศชายและเพศหญิง นามและคุณศัพท์มี 3 การกคือ ประธาน กรรมและแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ มีจำนวน 3 แบบคือ เอกพจน์ ทวิพจน์ และพหูพจน์ ลักษณะของคำกริยาเป็นเช่นเดียวกับภาษากลุ่มเซมิติกตะวันตกเฉียงเหนืออื่น ๆ การเรียงประโยคเป็นแบบกริยา-ประธาน-กรรม คำแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของมาก่อน และคำนามมาก่อนคำคุณศัพท์ จัดเป็นภาษากลุ่มเซมิติกที่มีลักษณะอนุรักษนิยม มีระบบของการกและการเรียงคำตามแบบภาษาเซมิติกดั้งเดิม

อักษรยูการิตเป็นอักษรรูปลิ่มที่เป็นอักษรไร้สระ ใช้เมื่อราว 1,000 ปีก่อนพุทธศักราช อักษรนี้มีลักษณะคล้ายอักษรรูปลิ่มในเมโสโปเตเมีย แต่ไม่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกัน จัดเป็นตัวอย่างที่เก่าที่สุดของอักษรในกลุ่มเซมิติกตะวันตกที่ใชกับภาษาฟินิเชีย ภาษาแอราเมอิก และภาษาฮีบรู มีอักษร 22–31 ตัว ใช้เฉพาะบริเวณยูการิต ไม่พบที่อื่น

ภาษายูการิตมีเสียงพยัญชนะ 28 เสียง โดยมีเสียงกึ่งสระ 2 เสียงและมีสระ 8 เสียง (สั้น 3 ยาว 5) ลักษณะทางสัทวิทยาใกล้เคียงกับภาษาคานาอันไนต์ ต่างกันที่ว่า ภาษายูการิตไม่มีการยกเสียงสระจาก ā → ō
