ฌ็อง-ปอล ซาทร์ (ฝรั่งเศส: Jean-Paul Sartre, 21 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2448 กรุงปารีส, ประเทศฝรั่งเศส - 15 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2523 ที่กรุงปารีส) เป็นนักเขียนนวนิยาย, นักบทละคร, นักปรัชญา และผู้มีบทบาทสำคัญในแนวคิดอัตถิภาวนิยมหรือทฤษฎีที่ว่าทุกคนนั้นอิสระและรับผิดชอบในการกระทำของตน (Existentialism) เป็นนักปรัชญาผู้ประกาศเสรีภาพของมนุษย์ในแง่ปัจเจกชน ได้รับรางวัลโนเบลสาขาวรรณกรรมเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2507 (ค.ศ. 1964) แต่ไม่ยอมรับรางวัลดังกล่าว

บทความนี้อ้างอิงคริสต์ศักราช/คริสต์ทศวรรษ/คริสต์ศตวรรษ ซึ่งเป็นสาระสำคัญของเนื้อหา

ฌ็อง-ปอล ซาทร์ เข้ารับการศึกษาที่ เอโกล นอร์มาล ซูเปรีเยอร์ ระหว่างปี ค.ศ. 1924 – ค.ศ. 1929 เมื่อเรียนจบ ก็ได้เป็นอาจารย์สาขาปรัชญาที่ เลอ แอร์ฟ เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1931 ซาทร์สูญเสียบิดาตั้งแต่วัยเยาว์ และเติบโตในบ้านของตา ชื่อ คาร์ล ชไวทเซอร์ (ผู้เป็นลุงของอัลเบิร์ต ชไวทเซอร์) ซึ่งเป็นศาสตราจารย์ภาษาเยอรมันที่มหาวิทยาลัยซอร์บอนน์

ระหว่างปี 1931 - 1945 ซาทร์ได้สอนหนังสือหลายที่ รวมทั้งในอังกฤษ และสุดท้ายก็กลับมาที่ปารีส มีสองครั้งที่อาชีพของเขาถูกขัดขวาง ครั้งหนึ่ง เมื่อต้องศึกษาเป็นเวลา 1 ปี ในกรุงเบอร์ลิน และครั้งที่สองเมื่อต้องเป็นทหารในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 เมื่อปี 1939 ครั้นปีต่อมาถูกจับเป็นเชลย และอีกปีถัดมาก็ได้รับการปลดปล่อย

ซาทร์ได้รับอิทธิพลจากนักปรัชญาเยอรมัน ชื่อเอดมุนด์ ฮุสเซล และนำมาใช้ด้วยทักษะอันเลิศในผลงานพิมพ์ 3 เล่ม คือ L'Imagination (1936; จินตนาการ), Esquisse d'une théorie des émotions (1939; ร่างทฤษฎีแห่งอารมณ์) และ L'Imaginaire : Psychologie phénoménologique de l'imagination (1940; จิตวิทยาแห่งจินตนาการ) แต่ทว่าใน L'Être et le néant (1943; ความมีอยู่ และความไม่มีอะไร)ซาทร์กำหนดฐานะของจิตสำนึกมนุษย์ หรือความไม่มีอะไร (néant) ไว้ตรงข้ามความมีอยู่ หรือความเป็นสิ่งของ (être)

ซาทร์เริ่มเขียนนวนิยายชุด 4 เล่ม เมื่อปี 1945 ชื่อ Les Chemins de la liberté อีก 3 เล่ม คือ L'Âge de raison (1945; ยุคแห่งเหตุผล), Le Sursis (1945; ) และ La Mort dans l'âme (1949;เหล็กในวิญญาณ) หลังพิมพ์ครั้งที่ 3 ซาทร์ก็เปลี่ยนใจหันกลับไปสู่บทละครอีก

หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง ซาทร์เขียนโจมตีความยะโสของมนุษย์ และเสรีภาพของปัจเจกชน ซาทร์ได้เปลี่ยนความสดใสไปสู่แนวคิดของความรับผิดชอบของสังคมหลายปีแล้ว ที่เขาแสดงความใสใจคนรวย และคนที่ไม่มีมรดกทุกชนิด ขณะเป็นครูเขาปฏิเสธไม่ยอมผูกเน็คไท ราวกับเขาจะเช็ดชนชั้นทางสังคมให้สลายไปด้วยเน็คไท และเข้าใกล้พวกคนใช้แรงงานมากขึ้น ในงานเรื่อง L'Existentialisme est un humanisme (1946;) ตอนนี้เสรีภาพแสดงนัยของความรับผิดชอบทางสังคม ในนวนิยายและบทละครเรื่องต่างๆ ของเขา
