นกหงส์หยก (ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ : Melopsittacus undulatus ) เป็นนกปากขอ ขนาดเล็กชนิดหนึ่ง ที่มีลวดลายและสีสันที่สวยงาม ถิ่นกำเนิดดั้งเดิมของนกหงส์หยกอยู่ตามแถบทุ่งหญ้าในประเทศออสเตรเลีย มีชื่อเรียกเล่น ๆ ว่า "บัดจี" (budgie) หรือ "แพระคีต" (parakeet) ครั้งหนึ่ง ผู้คนทั่วไปเคยเข้าใจว่านกหงส์หยกเป็นนกที่อยู่ในจำพวกนกเลิฟเบิร์ด แต่ในปัจจุบันได้ยอมรับกันแล้วว่าเป็นนกคนละจำพวกกัน โดยผู้ที่ทำการอนุกรมวิธาน คือ นักวิทยาศาสตร์ชาวอังกฤษ จอห์น กูลด์ ที่เข้าไปศึกษาธรรมชาติวิทยาที่ออสเตรเลียเมื่อกว่า 100 ปีมาแล้ว โดยถือเป็นนกเพียงชนิดเดียวเท่านั้นที่อยู่ในสกุล Melopsittacus
โดยทั่วไปแล้วสีตามธรรมชาติ นกหงส์หยกมักมีขนสีเขียว, ฟ้า, เหลือง และขาว แต่ปัจจุบันได้มีการพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ให้มีความหลากหลายออกไปจากสีดั้งเดิมตามธรรมชาติในฐานะของการเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง โดยมีชื่อเรียกต่าง ๆ กันตามลักษณะ อาทิ "โอแพล์ลิน", "อัลบิโนส์" และ"ลูติโนส์"

นกหงส์หยกเป็นนกเร่ร่อนพบในที่อยู่อาศัยแบบเปิด ส่วนใหญ่ในทุ่งไม้พุ่ม บริเวณที่เป็นป่าเปิด และทุ่งหญ้าของออสเตรเลีย นกที่พบตามปกติจะอยู่ในฝูงขนาดเล็ก แต่สามารถอยู่ร่วมกันในฝูงที่ใหญ่มากในกรณีที่ถิ่นที่อยู่ดีมาก จำนวนตั้งแต่หลักหมื่นถึงล้านตัว จึงเป็นนกที่มีการเร่ร่อนมาก และการเคลื่อนย้ายจะเป็นไปตามความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของแหล่งอาหาร และน้ำ เป็นนกที่ใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่หมดไปกับการเกี้ยวพาราสีและแลกเปลี่ยนกันถึงสถานที่ ๆ มีแหล่งอาหาร โดยขณะที่รวมตัวกันจำนวนมากนั้น อาจถูกนกนักเหยื่อ เช่น เหยี่ยว ล่าเป็นอาหารได้ แต่นกหงส์หยกก็มีวิธีการบินหลบเลี่ยงที่ดี และสามารถบินลงไปดื่มน้ำได้ขณะที่บินหนีได้อีกด้วย ด้วยการทิ้งตัวดิ่งลงมาคล้ายก้อนหิน
สัตว์เลี้ยง ปัจจุบัน นกหงส์หยกเป็นนกที่ได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากในฐานะเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง จัดเป็นนกที่เลี้ยงง่ายเพาะขยายพันธุ์ได้ง่าย มีราคาถูก ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้มีการพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ต่าง ๆ จนมีสีสันและลวดลายต่าง ๆ สวยงามกว่าในธรรมชาติ โดยพฤติกรรมตามธรรมชาติ นกหงส์หยกจะอยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูง ดังนั้นถ้าเลี้ยงรวมในกรงใหญ่ นกจะมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กันเอง แต่ถ้าเลี้ยงเพียงตัวเดียวหรือคู่เดียว ก็ควรมีของเล่นต่าง ๆ ให้ หรือกระจก สำหรับส่องเพื่อที่นกจะเข้าใจว่ามีตัวอื่นอยู่ร่วมด้วย และใช้สำหรับส่องเพื่อไซ้แต่งขน อาหารหลักของนกหงส์หยก คือ ข้าวฟ่าง , ผัก ใบเขียวชนิดต่าง ๆ และอาจให้แร่ธาตุเสริม คือ แคลเซียม จากลิ้นทะเล หรือกระดองปลาหมึกด้วย
สถานที่เลี้ยงควรเป็นที่โปร่ง อากาศถ่ายเทได้ดี ผู้เลี้ยงควรที่จะฉีดสเปรย์น้ำเพื่อที่จะทำความสะอาดนกด้วย การจำแนกเพศของนกหงส์หยก สังเกตได้ที่จมูก ในนกตัวผู้เมื่อเจริญเต็มที่หรือพร้อมที่จะผสมพันธุ์ จะเป็นสีฟ้าเข้ม และในนกตัวเมียนั้นจมูกของนกเมื่อเจริญเต็มที่หรือพร้อมที่จะผสมพันธุ์ จมูกของนกจะมีสีออกเป็นสีเนื้อหรือสีน้ำตาลเข้ม สีดังกล่าวจะเข้มขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ เมื่ออยู่ในฤดูผสมพันธุ์ นกหงส์หยกจะจับคู่เมื่อมันพร้อมที่จะผสมพันธุ์ โดยสังเกตได้จากนกจะอยู่กันเป็นคู่ ไซ้ขนให้กัน และคอยป้อนอาหารให้กัน โดยเข้าสู่วัยเจริญพันธุ์ เมื่ออายุได้ราว 11 เดือน หรือ 1 ปี วางไข่ครั้งละ 4-8 ฟอง ระยะฟักตัวประมาณ 18-20 วัน ลูกนกจะโผล่พ้นรังเมื่ออายุได้ 4-5 สัปดาห์
