ลูนา เกิดวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม 2536 ในโซล ประเทศเกาหลีใต้ โดยลูนามีพี่สาวฝาแฝด ในเดือนตุลาคม 2554 เธอได้เข้าสมัครเรียนที่มหาวิทยาลัย ในโซล ชื่อ Chung-Ang University คณะเกี่ยวศิลปะ เธอได้ถูกทาบทามจาก SM Entertainment ให้มาเป็นเด็กฝึกหัดในค่าย ก่อนที่จะเปิดตัวอย่างเป็นทางการกับการเป็นนักร้องเสียงหลักในวง เอฟ(เอกซ์)
