ศิลปะคนนอก

ศิลปะคนนอก (อังกฤษ: Outsider art) คำว่า “Outsider art” เป็นคำที่คิดขึ้นโดยนักวิพากษ์ศิลป์โรเจอร์ คาร์ดินัลในปี ค.ศ. 1972 ที่พ้องกับคำในภาษาอังกฤษว่า “art brut” (ศิลปะดิบ หรือ ศิลปะหยาบ) ซึ่งเป็นคำที่คิดขึ้นโดยศิลปินฝรั่งเศสฌอง ดูบูฟเฟต์ในการบรรยายศิลปะที่สร้างนอกกรอบของวัฒนธรรมที่เป็นทางการโดยทั่วไป ดูบูฟเฟต์เน้นโดยเฉพาะศิลปะที่สร้างโดยคนไข้ในโรงพยาบาลโรคจิต

ขณะที่คำที่ใช้โดยดูบูฟเฟต์มีความหมายค่อนข้างเฉพาะเจาะจง แต่คำว่า “Outsider art” หรือ “ศิลปะคนนอก” เป็นคำที่มีความหมายกว้างกว่า และรวมงานศิลปะที่สร้างโดยผู้ที่ศึกษาศิลปะด้วยตนเอง หรือผู้สร้างงานศิลปะแบบที่เรียกว่าศิลปะไร้มายา (Naïve art) โดยทั่วไปแล้วศิลปินคนนอกแทบจะไม่มีหรือไม่มีการติดต่อกับโลกศิลปะหรือสถาบันศิลปะ และในหลายกรณีงานศิลปะของศิลปินเหล่านี้มาพบเองเมื่อตัวศิลปินเสียชีวิตไปแล้ว ส่วนใหญ่แล้วศิลปะคนนอกจะเป็นศิลปะที่แสดงถึงความกดดันทางจิตใจอย่างสูง, ความคิดที่นอกแนว หรือเป็นโลกของแฟนตาซีอันซับซ้อน

ศิลปะคนนอกเริ่มเป็นประเภทของศิลปะที่ประสบความสำเร็จในตลาด ถึงกับมีงานแสดงประจำปีเช่นงานแสดงประจำปีของศิลปะคนนอกที่จัดขึ้นที่นิวยอร์กมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1992 คำนี้บางครั้งก็นำมาใช้เพื่อการตลาดที่หมายถึงศิลปะที่สร้างขึ้นโดยผู้ที่ไม่ได้อยู่ในวงการศิลปะไม่ว่าจะเป็นลักษณะใดหรือเนื้อหาใด

ในปี ค.ศ. 1991 ก็ได้มีการตั้งองค์การที่อุทิศให้กับการศึกษา, การจัดนิทรรศการ และการเผยแพร่งานศิลปะคนนอกในชิคาโก อินทิวอิท: ศูนย์เพื่อศิลปะริเริ่มและศิลปะคนนอก (Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art) เป็นศูนย์ที่ยอมรับกันว่าเป็นศูนย์สำหรับศิลปินคนนอกผู้สอนตนเองเช่น -- เฮนรี ดาร์เจอร์, โจเซฟ โยคัม, ลี โกดี, วิลเลียม ดอว์สัน, เดวิด ฟิลพ็อต, และ เวสลีย์ วิลลิส ศูนย์มีพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่จัดการแสดงภาพของศิลปินคนนอก และผู้สอนตนเองในการสร้างงานศิลปะ
