สัตว์กินคนแห่งซาโว (อังกฤษ: Tsavo Man-Eaters) คือคู่สิงโตกินคนที่มีชื่อเสียง ซึ่งมีส่วนในการตายของคนงานก่อสร้างทางรถไฟเคนยา-ยูกันดาระหว่างเดือนมีนาคมถึงเดือนธันวาคม ค.ศ. 1898

ประวัติ

 

สิงโตตัวแรกที่ถูกฆ่าโดยแพตเทอร์สัน หรือที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ FMNH 23970

ในเดือนมีนาคม ค.ศ. 1898 สหราชอาณาจักรได้เริ่มสร้างสะพานทางรถไฟข้ามแม่น้ำซาโวในประเทศเคนยาโดยมีผู้รับผิดชอบโครงการนี้คือ พันโท จอห์น เฮนรี แพตเทอร์สัน ระหว่างเก้าเดือนในการก่อสร้าง สิงโตซาโวตัวผู้สองตัวได้ย่องมาที่ค่ายพักลากคนงานชาวอินเดียจากเต็นท์ไปกินในเวลากลางคืน คนงานได้พยายามทำให้สิงโตตกใจกลัวและก่อกองไฟ และสร้างรั้วหนามรอบแค้มป์งานเพื่อป้องกันสัตว์กินคนแต่กลับไร้ประโยชน์ สิงโตสามารถคลานผ่านรั้วหนามมาได้ หลังการโจมตีครั้งใหม่ คนงานหลายร้อยคนหนีออกจากซาโวทำให้การสร้างสะพานหยุดชะงัก แพตเทอร์สันได้วางกับดักและซุ่มยิงจากต้นไม้ในเวลากลางคืนหลายครั้ง หลังประสบความล้มเหลวหลายครั้ง เขายิงสิงโตตัวแรกได้ในวันที่ 9 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 1898 สามสัปดาห์ต่อมา สิงโตตัวที่สองถูกพบและฆ่าตาย สิงโตตัวแรกวัดได้ยาว 9 ฟุต 8 นิ้ว จากปลายจมูกจรดหาง ใช้คนถึงแปดคนในการแบกซากกลับแคมป์ คนงานก่อสร้างกลับมาและสร้างสะพานเสร็จในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ ค.ศ. 1899 จำนวนผู้ตกเป็นเหยื่อของสิงโตนั้นไม่แน่ชัด แพตเทอร์สันอ้างว่ามีผู้ที่ตกเป็นเหยื่อถึง 135 คน

ปัจจุบัน สะพานและสถานที่เกิดเหตุตั้งอยู่ในอุทยานแห่งชาติซาโว ในเคนยา ประมาณ 200 ไมล์ (300 กิโลเมตร) ทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของกรุงไนโรบี ที่พิกัด 2°59′37″S 38°27′41″E / 2.993558°S 38.461458°E / -2.993558; 38.461458
