คำว่า "หมื่นปี" (萬歲; ten thousand years) นั้นเดิมใช้อวยพรให้บุคคลมีอายุยืนนาน ครั้นสมัยราชวงศ์ถัง ถ้อยคำดังกล่าวสงวนไว้สำหรับพระเจ้าแผ่นดิน พระเจ้าแผ่นดินจึงได้ชื่อว่า "พระหมื่นปี" (จีนตัวย่อ: 万岁爷; จีนตัวเต็ม: 萬歲爺; พินอิน: wànsuì ye; Lord of Ten Thousand Years) ถึงยุคห้าราชวงศ์สิบอาณาจักร ได้ใช้สำหรับข้าราชการชั้นผู้ใหญ่อยู่ช่วงสั้น ๆ ช่วงหนึ่ง เพราะต่อมาถือกันว่า ถ้าใช้แก่ผู้อื่นนอกจากพระเจ้าแผ่นดินเป็นความผิดอุกฉกรรจ์
