อินเตอร์นิวรอน

interneuron หรือ internuncial neuron หรือ relay neuron หรือ association neuron หรือ connector neuron หรือ intermediate neuron หรือ local circuit neuron เป็นเซลล์ประสาทที่ส่งกระแสประสาทจากนิวรอนหนึ่งไปยังอีกนิวรอนหนึ่ง เป็นเซลล์ประสาทแบบหนึ่งในสามอย่างโดยจัดตามการทำงาน ที่มีจำนวนมากที่สุด (ประมาณ 90%) ในร่างกายมนุษย์ (โดยอีกสองอย่างคือเซลล์ประสาทรับความรู้สึกและเซลล์สั่งการ) โดยแบ่งได้เป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือแบบเฉพาะที่ (local) และแบบรีเลย์ แบบเฉพาะที่จะมีแอกซอนสั้น ๆ และสร้างวงจรประสาทกับนิวรอนใกล้ ๆ ส่วนแบบรีเลย์ซึ่งเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่า projection interneuron จะมีแอกซอนยาวและส่งกระแสประสาทไปได้ไกล ๆ จากสมองเขตหนึ่งไปยังอีกเขตหนึ่ง เซลล์เรียกว่า interneuron (คือนิวรอนในระหว่าง) ก็เพราะเป็นเซลล์ประสาททั้งหมดในระหว่างเซลล์ประสาทรับความรู้สึกกับเซลล์ประสาทสั่งการ (motor neuron) เป็นเซลล์ประสาทรวมทั้งที่อยู่ในไขสันหลังและสมอง นอกจากจะเชื่อมเซลล์หนึ่งกับอีกเซลล์หนึ่งแล้ว interneuron ยังมีหน้าที่รวบรวมผลในระบบประสาท คือมีหน้าที่ประมวลข้อมูล เก็บข้อมูล ค้นคืนข้อมูล และตัดสินใจว่าร่างกายควรจะตอบสนองต่อสิ่งเร้าเช่นไร interneuron มีบทบาทในการทำงานของรีเฟล็กซ์และของการแกว่งกวัดของคลื่นประสาท (neuronal oscillation) การทำงานร่วมกันระหว่าง interneuron ทำให้ระบบประสาทสามารถทำหน้าที่ซึ่งซับซ้อน เช่น การเรียนรู้และการตัดสินใจได้
