เอโมจิ

เอโมจิ (ญี่ปุ่น: 絵文字（えもじ）) หรือ อิโมจี (อังกฤษ: emoji) คือตัวหนังสือความคิดและสไมลีย์ที่ใช้กันในข้อความอิเล็กทรอนิกส์และเว็บเพจ เอโมจิปรากฏในหลายรูปแบบ เช่น การแสดงสีหน้าและกิริยาอาการ วัตถุ สถานที่ ลมฟ้าอากาศ สัตว์ เป็นต้น เอโมจิมีลักษณะเหมือนสัญรูปอารมณ์มาก แต่มาจากรูปภาพจริงแทนที่จะมาจากตัวอักษร ตัวเลข หรือเครื่องหมายวรรคตอนประสมกันอย่างสัญรูปอารมณ์ เดิมคำ เอโมจิ มีความหมายว่า ตัวหนังสือภาพ โดยมาจากคำ เอะ (絵, "ภาพ") ประสมกับคำ โมจิ (文字, "ตัวหนังสือ") ความคล้ายคลึงระหว่างรูปอักษรโรมันของคำนี้ (คือ emoji) กับคำ emotion และ emoticon ในภาษาอังกฤษเป็นเรื่องบังเอิญเท่านั้น

อีโมจิมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ของญี่ปุ่นในปี พ.ศ. 2542 โดยนายชิเกตากะ คูริตะ ผู้มีอาชีพนักออกแบบของบริษัทผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์แห่งหนึ่งในญี่ปุ่นเพื่อช่วยให้การสื่อสารทางโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่นั้นง่ายขึ้น ในครั้งนั้นเขาได้คิดค้นอีโมจิรวมทั้งหมด 176 แบบ

ในคริสต์ทศวรรษ 2010 เอโมจิได้รับความนิยมเพิ่มขึ้นทั่วโลกหลังจากที่มีการเพิ่มเอโมจิเข้าไปในระบบปฏิบัติการสำหรับอุปกรณ์เคลื่อนที่หลายระบบ ปัจจุบันถือว่าเอโมจิเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของวัฒนธรรมประชานิยมในโลกตะวันตก ในปี พ.ศ. 2558 ออกซฟอร์ดดิกชันนารีส์ ประกาศให้เอโมจิรูปใบหน้ากับน้ำตาแห่งความยินดี (Face with Tears of Joy emoji) เป็นคำแห่งปี
