หงส์แตร (ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ : Cygnus buccinator ) เป็นนกอพยพที่มีความทนทานที่สุดที่ดำรงอยู่ในทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ และยังจัดเป็นหนึ่งในสายพันธุ์ของนกน้ำที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก เป็นสัตว์คู่กับทวีปอเมริกาเหนือและยังเป็นญาติสนิทของหงส์กู่ ในภาคพื้นทวีปยูเรเชีย มีบางหน่วยงานได้พิจารณาให้หงส์กู่และหงส์แตรเป็นสัตว์ที่อยู่ในสปีชีส์เดียวกัน

หงส์แตรเป็นนกน้ำที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดของโลก โดยที่ตัวโตเต็มวัยจะมีลำตัวยาว 138-165 เซนติเมตร (วัดปลายจะงอยปากถึงทวารหนัก) แต่เพศผู้สามารถมีขนาดตัวได้ใหญ่สุดถึง 180 เซนติเมตรหรือมากกว่านั้น น้ำหนักตัวโตเต็มวัยอยู่ที่ 7-13.6 กิโลกรัม โดยที่น้ำหนักตัวเฉลี่ยของเพศผู้อยู่ที่ 11.9 กิโลกรัม ส่วนเพศเมียอยู่ที่ 9.3 กิโลกรัม มีช่วงกว้างปีกระหว่าง 185-250 เซนติเมตร โดยปีกมีความกว้างขนาด 60-68 เซนติเมตร หงส์แตรเพศผู้ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดที่เคยบันทึกได้ มีขนาดตัวอยู่ที่ 183 เซนติเมตร ช่วงกว้างปีก 3.1 เมตร น้ำหนักตัว 17.2 กิโลกรัม
หงส์แตรวัยเยาว์จะมีขนสีเทา
หงส์แตรโตเต็มวัยจะมีขนเป็นสีขาวทั้งหมด เช่นเดียวกับหงส์กู่ แต่ในวัยเยาว์จะมีขนสีเทาและเริ่มเปลี่ยนเป็นสีขาว ซึ่งสายพันธุ์นี้จะยืนขาตรงและลำคอตรงอยู่เสมอ หงส์แตรมีจะงอยปากรูปทรงลิ่มสำดำขนาดใหญ่ ขนาดราว 10.5-12 เซนติเมตร ซึ่งยาวเป็นสองเท่าของจะงอยปาก ของห่านแคนาดา (Branta canadensis ) มีขาสีเทาอมชมพู มีเท้าขนาด 10.5-12 เซนติเมตร
