Filopaludina martensi หอยฝาเดี่ยว จำพวกหอยขม (Viviparidae) ชนิดหนึ่ง
พบในน้ำจืดมีขนาดเล็ก เปลือกเป็นเกลียวกลมยอดแหลม เปลือกหนาและแข็ง ผิวชั้นนอกเป็นสีเขียวแก่ ฝาปิดเปลือกเป็นแผ่นกลม ตีนใหญ่ จะงอยปากสั้นทู่ ตามีสีดำอยู่ตรงกลางระหว่างโคนหนวด ตัวผู้มีหนวดเส้นข้างขวาพองโตกว่าเส้นข้างซ้าย ลักษณะพิเศษของหอยชนิดนี้ จะมีอวัยวะเพศทั้งเพศผู้และเพศเมียอยู่ในตัวเดียวกัน ออกลูกเป็นตัว และผสมพันธุ์ได้ด้วยตัวเองเมื่ออายุได้ 60 วัน ออกลูกเป็นตัวครั้งละประมาณ 40-50 ตัว หอยที่ออกมาใหม่ ๆ มีวุ้นหุ้มอยู่ แม่หอยจะใช้หนวดแทงวุ้นจนแตก เพื่อให้ลูกหอยหลุดออกจากวุ้น หอยขมสามารถเคลื่อนไหวได้ทันทีเมื่อออกจากตัวแม่ จะพบเห็นชุกชุมอยู่ในช่วงเดือนธันวาคม-พฤษภาคม มักอาศัยในแหล่งน้ำจืด เช่น คู, คลอง, หนอง, บึง ที่น้ำไม่ไหลแรงและเป็นน้ำนิ่ง มีระดับความลึกตั้งแต่ 10 เซนติเมตร ถึง 2 เมตร มักเกาะอยู่กับพันธุ์ไม้น้ำ, เสาหลัก, ตอไม้ หรือตามพื้น กินอาหารจำพวกสาหร่าย และอินทรีย์สาร หรือเศษใบไม้ใบหญ้าผุ ๆ ในน้ำ รวมทั้งซากอินทรีย์ที่เน่าเปื่อยและผงตะกอนที่จมอยู่ตามผิวดิน
นับเป็นหอยขมชนิดที่พบได้แพร่หลายมากที่สุดในประเทศไทย และยังพบได้ในภูมิภาคใกล้เคียง เช่น ลาว, กัมพูชา, อินโดนีเซีย, มาเลเซีย และเวียดนาม โดยชนิดต้นแบบ พบในประเทศไทย ขณะที่ยังใช้ชื่อประเทศว่า "สยาม " อยู่
นิยมนำมาปรุงเป็นอาหารต่าง ๆ ในตำรับอาหารไทย เช่น แกงคั่วหอยขม มีการส่งเสริมให้มีการเพาะเลี้ยงกันเป็นสัตว์เศรษฐกิจ และยังมีความเชื่อด้วยว่า หากใครได้ปล่อยหอยชนิดนี้ลงกลับสู่ธรรมชาติ จะนำความขมขื่นให้หมดไป
