อินทรอน

อินทรอน (อังกฤษ: intron ซึ่งย่อมาจากคำว่า intragenic region) เป็นลำดับนิวคลีโอไทด์ภายในยีนที่กระบวนการ RNA splicing เอาออกในการสร้างผลิตภัณฑ์อาร์เอ็นเอที่สมบูรณ์ (mature RNA) กล่าวอีกนัยก็คือ อินทรอนไม่ใช่ส่วนของดีเอ็นเอและไม่ใช่ส่วนของรหัสอาร์เอ็นเอ (RNA transcript) ที่รอดผ่านกระบวนการทำให้เป็นอาร์เอ็นเออันสมบูรณ์ แล้วใช้แปลรหัสเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ยีน คำว่า intron มาจากคำว่า intragenic region ซึ่งแปลว่าบริเวณภายในยีน เป็นคำที่หมายเอาทั้งลำดับนิวคลีโอไทด์ของดีเอ็นเอที่เป็นเหตุ และลำดับรหัสอาร์เอ็นเอที่เป็นผล อาร์เอ็นเอที่สมบูรณ์แล้วประกอบด้วยส่วนเอ็กซอนที่เชื่อมเข้าด้วยกันหลังจากผ่านกระบวนการ RNA splicing ซึ่งกำจัดส่วนอินทรอนแล้ว

อินทรอนพบได้ในยีนของสิ่งมีชีวิตโดยมากและของไวรัสหลายอย่าง พบได้ในยีนต่าง ๆ เป็นจำนวนมากรวมทั้งที่ใช้สร้างโปรตีน, ไรโบโซมอล อาร์เอ็นเอ (rRNA) และทีอาร์เอ็นเอ (transfer RNA) เมื่อโปรตีนสร้างขึ้นจากยีนที่มีอินทรอน ก็จะต้องผ่านกระบวนการ RNA splicing หลังจากการถอดรหัสแต่ก่อนการแปลรหัส
