ชาวสานตาล

สานตาล (อักษรโรมัน: Santal หรือ Santhal) เป็นกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์มุนดาในเอเชียใต้ ถือเป็นชนเผ่าที่ขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในรัฐฌารขัณฑ์ของประเทศอินเดีย และมีประชากรอยู่ในรัฐอัสสัม, ตริปุระ, พิหาร, ฉัตตีสครห์, โอริศา และ เบงกอลตะวันตก และเป็นชนเผ่ากลุ่มน้อยที่สำคัญของมณฑลราชชาฮี และ รังปุระ ของประเทศบังกลาเทศ นอกจากนี้ยังมีประชากรในเนปาล และ ภูฏาน ภาษาที่ใช้คือภาษาสานตาลซึ่งเป็นภาษาที่มีการใช้มากที่สุดในกลุ่มภาษามุนดา

คำว่าสานตาลเป็นไปได้ว่าเป็นคำที่เรียกโดยคนนอก (exonym) จากภาษาเบงกอล ซึ่งแปลว่าผู้อยู่อาศัยในพื้นที่ Saont (ปัจจุบันคือสิลดา มณมิทนาปุระซึ่งถือกันว่าเป็นมาตุภูมิของชาวสานตาล) ส่วนชื่อเรียกชาติพันธุ์ (ethnonym) คือ Hor Hopon ("บุตรของมนุษยชาติ")
