ชโยติรลึงค์

ชโยติรลึงค์ (Jyotirlinga) หรือ ชโยติรลิงคัม (Jyotirlingam) ปางปรากฏของพระศิวะที่ได้รับการเคารพบูชาสูง คำว่า ชโยติ (Jyoti) แปลว่า รัศมี/เปล่งแสง ('radiance') และ ลึงค์ หมายถึงรูปแทนพระศิวะ รวมกันจึงหมายความว่า รูปองค์พระศิวะที่เปล่งประกาย ชโยติรลึงค์ตามธรรมเนียมนั้นประกอบด้วยโบสถ์พราหมณ์ (มนเทียร) 12 แห่งในประเทศอินเดีย

ตำนาน

ศิวปุราณะ ระบุว่าครั้นหนึ่งพระพรหม (ผู้สร้าง) และพระวิษณุ (ผู้รักษา) ได้มีการถกเถียงกันถึงอำนาจสูงสุดของการสร้าง (supremacy of creation) เพื่อให้ได้ข้อตกลงกัน พระศิวะจึงได้เจาะ (pierced) โลกทั้งสามปรากฏเป็นเสาแห่งแสงสว่างที่มีขนาดมหีมาเป็นอนันต์ ที่เรียกว่า ชโยติรลึงค์ หลังเสานี้เย็นลงได้บังเกิดเป็นเขาอันนมาไล (Annamalai Hills) ซึ่งในปัจจุบันคือที่ตั้งของอนุราจเลศวรมนเทียรตั้งอยู่ พระวิษณุและพระพรหมจึงทรงแบ่งกันค้นหาจุดจบของเสาแสงนี้ไปทางด้านบนและด้านล่าง พระพรหมทรงโกหกว่าได้ทรงพบจุดจบของเสา พระวิษณุจึงทรงยอมแพ้ในที่สุด การโกหกนี้ทำให้พระศิวะทรงโกรธมากและได้สาปพระพรหมให้แม้แต่พระองค์จะเป็นผู้สร้างจักรวาล พระองค์จะไม่ได้รับการสักการ ชโยติรลึงค์ จึงเป็นพระศิวะซึ่งเป็นอนันต์ มนเทยรแห่งชโยติรลึงค์ทั้งหมดเป็นที่ซึ่งพระศิวะทรงประทับในรูปของเสาแสงตติดไฟนั้น

ดั้งเดิมแล้วเชื่อกันว่ามีชโยติรลึงค์ทั้งหมด 64 แห่ง แต่มีเพียง 12 แห่งที่ได้รับการสักการะว่าศักดิ์สิทธิ์และยิ่งใหญ่เป็นอย่างมาก ชื่อของทั้ง 12 แห่งนั้นตั้งตามพระนามของเทพเจ้าองค์ประธาน ที่ซึ่งแต่ละแห่งเป็นรูปสำแดง (manifestation) ของพระศิวะ ในทุกมนเทียรของชโยติรลึงค์จะมีรูปเคารพหลักของมนเทียรที่เป็นองค์ประธานคือ ศิวลึงค์ ที่ซึ่งแสดงถึง สตมภ์ (Stambha) เสาอันไม่มีที่สิ้นสุดและไม่มีจุดเริ่มต้น เป็นสัญลักษณ์แทนธรรมชาติของพระศิวะที่เช่นกันไม่มีจุดเริ่มต้น และไม่มีจุดสิ้นสุด
