นกร่อนทะเล (อังกฤษ : Tropicbird ) เป็นวงศ์ของนกทะเลที่หากินบนผิวน้ำในมหาสมุทรเขตร้อน ปัจจุบันจัดอยู่ในอันดับกระทุง (Pelecaniformes) (บ้างก็จัดให้อยู่ในอันดับของตัวเองต่างหาก คือ Phaethontiformes) ใช้ชื่อวงศ์ว่า Phaethontidae
ความสัมพันธุ์กับนกชนิดอื่นยังไม่เป็นที่แน่ชัด แต่พบว่ามันไม่มีญาติใกล้ชิดอื่นอีก มี 3 ชนิด สกุลเดียวเท่านั้น คือ Phaethon ชุดขนส่วนมากเป็นสีขาว มีขนหางยาว ขาและเท้าเล็ก
ลักษณะ นกร่อนทะเลมีขนาดตั้งแต่ 76 เซนติเมตร ถึง 102 เซนติเมตร ช่วงปีกยาว 94 เซนติเมตร ถึง 112 เซนติเมตร ชุดขนส่วนใหญ่เป็นสีขาว มีขนตรงกลางหางยาว ทั้งสามชนิดต่างกันที่แต้มสีดำบนหน้า หลัง และปีก ปากใหญ่ แข็งแรง โค้งลงเล็กน้อย หัวใหญ่ คอสั้นหนา มีเท้าแบบพัดเต็ม (แผ่นพังผืดขึงติดต่อกันทั้ง 4 นิ้ว) ขาอยู่ด้านหลังไกลจากลำตัว ทำให้มันเดินไม่ได้ ดังนั้นการเคลื่อนที่บนบกมันทำได้เพียงดันตัวเองไปข้างหน้าด้วยเท้า
เสียงร้องของนกร่อนทะเลโดยทั่วไปจะดัง แหลม โหยหวน แต่แกรกกราก หรือเสียงแตก บ่อยครั้งที่ร้องเป็นชุดอย่างรวดเร็วเมื่อบินที่โคโลนี
