ปลาปล้องอ้อย เป็นสกุล ของปลาน้ำจืดขนาดเล็กจำพวกหนึ่ง ในวงศ์ปลาหมูแท้ (Cobitidae) ใช้ชื่อสกุลว่า Pangio (/แพน-กิ-โอ/)
มีรูปร่างโดยรวมคือ ลำตัวยาว แบนข้าง ท้องมน คอดหางกว้าง หัวเล็กปลายทู่ ปากเล็กอยู่ต่ำ ตาเล็ก มีกระดูกเป็นหนามอยู่ใต้ตา เกล็ดเล็กมาก ครีบหลังและครีบก้นอยู่ค่อนไปทางหาง ลำตัวมีสีต่าง ๆ ต่างออกไปตามแต่ละชนิด ตั้วแต่ มีลำตัวสีเหลือง ทอง มีแถบสีดำ ในชนิด P. anguillaris , สีน้ำตาล ตลอดทั้งตัว ในชนิด P. oblonga และเป็นสีดำสลับกับสีเหลืองเป็นปล้อง ๆ ในชนิด P. kuhlii P. myersi
มีความยาวโดยเฉลี่ยประมาณ 10 เซนติเมตร นิยมอยู่เป็นฝูงในลำธารน้ำตก หรือป่าพรุ หรือแม้แต่แหล่งน้ำ ขนาดใหญ่ เช่น แม่น้ำ มีการเคลื่อนไหวที่แลดูคล้ายการเลื้อยของงู ออกหากินในเวลากลางคืน กินอาหารจำพวก แมลงน้ำหรือแพลงก์ตอน สัตว์น้ำ จึงทำให้ได้อีกชื่อว่า "ปลางู" ซึ่งในภาษาอีสาน เรียกว่า "ปลาอาด"
พบกระจายพันธุ์อินเดีย จนถึงพม่า , ภูมิภาคอินโดจีน จนถึงหมู่เกาะซุนดา มีความสัมพันธ์ต่อมนุษย์ในแง่ของการเป็นปลาสวยงาม โดยเฉพาะในชนิด P. kuhlii และ P. myersi และใช้บริโภค ในชนิด P. anguillaris
ค้นพบครั้งแรกบริเวณลุ่มน้ำทางใต้ของประเทศไทย และประเทศมาเลเซีย ในขั้นแรกพบ 10 ชนิด
การจำแนก ปัจจุบันจำแนกออกเป็น 32 ชนิด โดยเป็นการพบที่หมู่เกาะซุนดาถึงกว่า 16 ชนิด
