ลักษณะและวงจรชีวิต ปลาอายุมีความยาวเต็มที่ 70 เซนติเมตร แต่ขนาดโดยเฉลี่ย 15 เซนติเมตร มีอายุสูงสุด 2 หรือ 3 ปี แต่โดยเฉลี่ยแล้วเพียง 1 ปีเท่านั้น จึงมักถูกเรียกในภาษาญี่ปุ่นว่า 年魚 (โรมาจิ : toshi-gyo ) หมายถึง "ปลาหนึ่งปี"
ปลาอายุเป็นปลาที่สามารถพบได้ในแม่น้ำ รวมถึงชายฝั่ง ของภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออก เช่น จีน , ญี่ปุ่น , เกาหลี , ฮ่องกง , ตอนเหนือของเวียดนาม และพบได้ในบางพื้นที่ที่ไม่ติดกับทะเล เช่น ทะเลสาบบิวะ รวมถึงไต้หวัน ที่ถูกนำเข้า จัดว่าเป็นปลาที่มีความสำคัญของภูมิภาคแถบนี้ เป็นปลาที่อาศัยอยู่ในแถบชายฝั่งทะเล กินอาหารได้หลากหลายทั้งสาหร่าย , ครัสเตเชียน , แมลง น้ำ รวมถึงฟองน้ำ สามารถกินสาหร่ายที่เกาะอยู่ตามโขดหินได้ด้วยฟันที่เป็นรูปเลื่อย แต่เมื่อถึงฤดูวางไข่จะว่ายน้ำทวนขึ้นไปวางไข่ถึงแหล่งต้นน้ำในแถบหุบเขาหรือลำธาร เหมือนกับปลาแซลมอน ในช่วงนี้ปลาทั้งตัวผู้และตัวเมียจะมีสีสันสดใสกว่าปกติ ตัวผู้จะว่ายตามตัวเมียที่มองหาที่วางไข่ จากนั้นเมื่อตัวเมียเข้าประจำที่วางไข่ ตัวผู้จะเข้าไปฉีดสเปิร์มเพื่อปฏิสนธิ มักจะวางไข่ในจุดที่น้ำไหลแรงเพื่อให้ไข่ได้รับออกซิเจนอย่างเต็มที่ เมื่อวางไข่เสร็จ ลำตัวปลาจะเต็มไปด้วยบาดแผลและจะหมดแรงก่อนจะตายลงในที่สุด และจะตกเป็นอาหารแก่สัตว์อื่น
ที่ญี่ปุ่น ที่เมืองเซกิ รวมถึงเมืองกิฟุ ในจังหวัดกิฟุ มีประเพณี การจับปลาอายุด้วยการใช้นกกาน้ำ ที่แม่น้ำนางาระ โดยเป็นประเพณีที่มีมาอย่างยาวนานกว่า 1,300 ปีแล้ว เรียกว่า "เทศกาลอูไก" (鵜飼) จะมีในช่วงกลางปีของทุกปี จนได้รับฉายา ว่า "ราชินีแห่งสายน้ำ" จัดเป็นอาหารที่ขึ้นชื่อของจังหวัดกิฟุ รวมถึงจังหวัดกุมมะ ในส่วนของชื่อภาษาอังกฤษที่หมายถึง "ปลาหวาน" มาจากเนื้อที่มีรสชาติหวาน โดยเป็นที่กล่าวขานกันว่ามีรสชาติหวานกลมกล่อมเหมือนแตงโม
