ชื่อพ้อง

ปลาเทราต์สีน้ำตาล (Salmo trutta) เป็นสายพันธุ์ปลาที่มีต้นกำเนิดในยุโรป จัดอยู่ในวงศ์ปลาแซลมอน ปลาสายพันธุ์นี้มีอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า ปลาเทราต์ทะเล โดยปกติพวกมันจะอาศัยอยู่ในน้ำทะเล แต่ในฤดูวางไข่พวกมันจะว่ายทวนแม่น้ำขึ้นมาวางไข่ในแหล่งนี้สะอาดเท่านั้น ปราเทราต์ทะเลในสหราชอาณาจักรและไอร์แลนด์นั้นมีชื่อเรียกที่แตกต่างกันออกไปตามภูมิภาค เช่นในเวลส์เรียกว่า เซวิน, ในสก็อตแลนด์เรียกว่า ฟินน็อก, ภาคตะวันตกเรียกว่า พีล, ภาคตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือเรียกว่า มอร์ท และในไอร์แลนด์เรียกว่า ไวต์เทราต์ ซึ่งถือเป็นหนึ่งในปลาเศรษฐกิจที่ผู้คนนิยมรับประทาน

ปลาเทราต์สีน้ำตาลนั้น มีการกระจายพันธุ์ตามธรรมชาติตั้งแต่ตอนเหนือของนอร์เวย์และบริเวณโดยรอบทะเลขาวของรัสเซียในมหาสมุทรอาร์กติก ไปจนถึงเทือกเขาแอตลาสในแอฟริกาตอนเหนือ ทา ตะวันตกมีการกระจายพันธุ์ไม่เกินไปกว่าไอซ์แลนด์ในแอตแลนติกตอนเหนือ ในขณะที่ทางตะวันออกมีการกระจายพันธุ์ไม่เกินไปกว่าบริเวณทะเลอารัลในอัฟกานิสถานและปากีสถาน

อนุกรมวิธานสัตว์

ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ของปลาเทราต์สีน้ำตาลนั้นคือ Salmo trutta โดยชื่อรอง trutta นั้นเป็นคำในภาษาละตินซึ่งมีความหมายว่า "เทราต์" ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากปลาเทราต์สีน้ำตาลถือเป็นปลาเทราต์สายพันธุ์แรกที่มีการค้นพบโดยนักสัตววิทยาชาวสวีเดน คาร์ล ลินเนียส ในหนังสือระบบธรรมชาติ (Systema Naturae) ฉบับพิมพ์ครั้งที่ 10 ปี ค.ศ. 1758 ซึ่งหนังสือนี้เองเป็นจุดกำเนิดของระบบการเรียกชื่อสิ่งมีชีวิตแบบทวินาม นอกจากนี้ ลินเนียสยังได้อธิบายถึงปลาเทราต์สายพันธุ์อื่นอีกสองสายพันธุ์ในหนังสือเล่มนี้ คือสายพันธุ์ Salmo fario ซึ่งพบในลุ่มแม่น้ำไรน์ และสายพันธุ์ Salmo lacustris ซึ่งพบในทะเลสาบเดวลลิง
