ราเชล คาร์สัน

ราเชล หลุยส์ คาร์สัน (อังกฤษ: Rachel Louise Carson; 27 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2450 — 14 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2507) นักธรรมชาติวิทยาและนักรณรงค์ เกิดที่เมืองสปริงเดล รัฐเพนซิลเวเนีย สหรัฐอเมริกา จบการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยจอนส์ฮอปกินส์แล้วเข้าทำงานด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ทางทะเลในหน่วยงานสัตว์น้ำและสัตว์ป่าของสหรัฐฯ ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2479-2492) ราเชลมีผลงานเขียนออกมามากที่สุดในช่วงระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2483-2492 โดยเฉพาะหนังสือที่เกี่ยวกับชีววิทยาทางทะเลส่งอิทธิพลสูงมาก และในปี พ.ศ. 2505 หนังสือเล่มสำคัญชื่อ “ความเงียบสงัดในฤดูใบไม้ผลิ” (The Silent Spring) ได้สร้างผลกระทบสูงสุดต่อสาธารณชนในด้านการตระหนักถึงผลกระทบ และภัยของยาฆ่าแมลงที่ใช้มากในภาคเกษตรกรรมของสหรัฐฯ ส่งผลให้มีการรณรงค์ด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างกว้างขวางไปทั่วสหรัฐฯ และทั่วโลกโดยมีราเชลเป็นผู้นำคนสำคัญ เป็นผลให้ริชาร์ด นิกสัน ต้องจัดตั้งหน่วยงานใหม่ขึ้นมาเพื่อปกป้องสิ่งแวดล้อมในระดับชาติ (The Environmental Protection Agency - EPA)ในปี พ.ศ. 2512 ซึ่งประเทศไทยก็ได้มีการจัดตั้งหน่วยงานในลักษณะเดียวกันคือ สำนักงานคณะกรรมการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติ (สนล.) เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2515

หนังสือชื่อ The Silent Spring ได้รับการจัดเป็นหนังสือ 1 ใน 100 เล่มที่ดีที่สุดของโลกของคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 สภาวิจัยแห่งชาติได้จัดแปลหนังสือเล่มนี้มานานก่อนหน้านี้ โดยใช้ชื่อภาษาไทยว่า เงามฤตยู
