สันสกฤตาภิวัตน์

ในทางสังคมวิทยา สันสกฤตาภิวัตน์ หรือ การทำเป็นสันสกฤต (อังกฤษ: Sanskritisation หรือ Sanskritization) เป็นกระบวนการที่ชนชั้นต่ำกว่าในระบบวรรณะเคลื่อนที่ขึ้นไปตามชนชั้นผ่านการเอาอย่างพิธีกรรมและการปฏิบัติของชนชั้นที่สูงกว่าหรือที่เป็นชนชั้นปกครอง กระบวนการนี้เหมือนกันกับการ "พาสซิง" ในสังคมวิทยา คำว่า “กระบวนการทำเป็นสันสกฤต” นั้นถูกทำให้นิยมขึ้นโดยเอ็ม เอ็น ศรีนิวาส นักวิชาการชาวอินเดียในช่วงทศวรรษ 1950s

ในมุมกว้าง อาจเรียกว่าเป็นกระบวนการ พรหมาภิวัตน์ หรือ การทำเป็นพราหมณ์ (อังกฤษ: Brahmanization) ซึ่งเป็นกระบวนการทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่ธรรมเนียมและขนบทางความเชื่อของท้องถิ่นอินเดียแปรไปตามและรวมเข้ากับธรรมเนียมพราหมณ์, สร้างลักษณะร่วมทั่วทั้งอินเดียของศาสนาฮินดู

นิยาม

ศรีนิวาสนิยามคำว่า สันสกฤตาภิวัตน์ (Sanskritisation) ว่าเป็นกระบวนการที่ซึ่ง

วรรณะหนึ่งในระบบฮินดูที่อยู่ในชนชั้น ต่ำ หรือ กลาง หรือชนเผ่า หรือกลุ่มคนอื่น ๆ มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงจารีต, ขนบ, พิธีกรรม, แนวคิด และวิถีชีวิต เพื่อให้เป็นไปในทิศเดียวกับวรรณะ ทวิชา โดยทั่วไปแล้ว การเปลี่ยนแปลงเช่นนี้จะนำไปสู่การเข้าสู่ระดับที่สูงขึ้นในวรรณะเดียวกับชนชั้นที่ตามขนบแล้วยอมรับกันในชุมชนท้องถิ่นว่าเป็นชนชั้นปกครอง ... ."
