พบกระจายพันธุ์อยู่เฉพาะที่ราบสูงเอธิโอเปีย ในประเทศเอธิโอเปียเท่านั้น เช่น อุทยานแห่งชาติเทือกเขาเบล โดยแบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ชนิดย่อย คือ หมาป่าเอธิโอเปียเหนือ (C. s. simensis) พบได้ในริฟต์วัลเลย์, เทือกเขาซีเมียน และหมาป่าเอธิโอเปียใต้ (C. s. citernii) ที่พบได้ในภูเขาเบล
