เกาะปริ่มน้ำ เป็นเกาะเล็กที่มีทรายกองบนพื้นผิวของแนวปะการังสูงเหนือระดับน้ำทะเลเล็กน้อย สามารถเกิดขึ้นในบริเวณที่มีอากาศร้อนทั้งในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก, มหาสมุทรอินเดีย, มหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก (รวมทั้งในทะเลแคริบเบียนและแนวปะการังเกรตแบร์ริเออร์รีฟและเบลีซแบร์ริเออร์รีฟ)

เกาะปริ่มน้ำเกิดขึ้นเมื่อกระแสน้ำมหาสมุทรนำพาตะกอนมาสะสมบริเวณแนวปะการังจากนั้นตะกอนก็จะค่อย ๆ สะสมและก่อตัวขึ้นบนผิวหน้าของแนวปะการัง บางครั้งตะกอนเหล่านี้ก็จะเกิดขึ้นบริเวณที่มีลมพัดพานำตะกอนมาสะสม

ส่วนมากตะกอนบนเกาะจะเป็นตะกอนชนิดเดียวกัน ซึ่งอาจเป็นซากปะการัง หรือซากกระดูกสัตว์ที่มาจากรอบ ๆ เกาะ หากเกาะนี้ส่วนมาประกอบด้วยทรายจะเรียกว่าคีย์แต่หากเกาะนั้นส่วนมากประกอบด้วยกรวดจะเรียกว่าโมตู (motu)

ตะกอนจะประกอบด้วยแคลเซียมคาร์บอเนต (CaCO₃) ส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในรูปอะราโกไนต์ แคลไซต์ และแมกนีเซียมแคลไซต์ ซึ่งมาจากกะละปังหา สาหร่ายใบมะกรูด ปะการัง สัตว์จำพวกมอลลัสกา ฟอรามินิเฟอรา และยังมีตะกอนซิลิเกตจากซากฟองน้ำและอื่น ๆ และเมื่อเวลาผ่านไปดินและพืชผักจะค่อย ๆ เกิดขึ้นบนผิวเกาะ รวมถึงจะค่อย ๆ มีปุ๋ยขี้นกสะสมตัวขึ้น
