การให้วัคซีน

การให้วัคซีน (อังกฤษ: vaccination) เป็นการรักษาทางการแพทย์อย่างหนึ่ง หมายถึงการให้สารที่เป็นแอนติเจน (วัคซีน) เข้าไปในร่างกาย เพื่อกระตุ้นระบบภูมิคุ้มกันของร่างกายให้สร้างภูมิคุ้มกันชนิดรับมา (adaptive immunity) เป็นแอนติบอดีที่มีความจำเพาะต่อเชื้อก่อโรคหนึ่งๆ ซึ่งจะสามารถป้องกันหรือลดความรุนแรงของโรคติดเชื้อได้ เมื่อมีสัดส่วนของประชากรที่ได้รับวัคซีนมากถึงระดับหนึ่งก็จะเกิดภูมิคุ้มกันหมู่ขึ้น ทำให้คนอื่นๆ ที่ไม่ได้รับวัคซีนหรือรับวัคซีนไม่ได้ ได้รับประโยชน์ในการป้องกันโรคจากผู้ที่มีภูมิคุ้มกันเหล่านี้ไปด้วย ประสิทธิผลของการให้วัคซีนนั้นได้รับการศึกษาอย่างกว้างขวางและเป็นที่ยืนยันแล้ว โดยพบว่าการให้วัคซีนเป็นวิธีการในการป้องกันโรคติดเชื้อที่ได้ผลดีที่สุด การมีภูมิคุ้มกันต่อเชื้อก่อโรคเป็นวงกว้างจากการให้วัคซีนนี้เป็นสาเหตุสำคัญที่ทำให้มนุษยชาติสามารถกำจัดเชื้อโรคบางอย่างให้หมดไปได้ เช่น ฝีดาษ และอีกหลายเชื้อที่กำลังจะหมดไป เช่น โปลิโอ หัด และบาดทะยัก เป็นต้น

การปลูกฝีเพื่อป้องกันโรคฝีดาษเป็นความพยายามครั้งแรกๆ ในการป้องกันโรคติดเชื้อโดยมนุษย์ และวัคซีนโรคฝีดาษก็เป็นวัคซีนชนิดแรกของโลกที่ถูกผลิตตามมา โดยถูกผลิตขึ้นใน ค.ศ. 1796 โดยแพทย์ชาวอังกฤษชื่อเอ็ดเวิร์ด เจนเนอร์ แม้จะมีคนอีกไม่น้อยกว่า 6 คนได้ใช้หลักการเดียวกันนี้พยายามทำวัคซีนมาก่อนแล้วแต่เขาเป็นคนแรกที่ได้ตีพิมพ์หลักฐานการค้นพบ ประสิทธิภาพ และคำแนะนำในการผลิตวัคซีนนี้แก่สาธารณะ ต่อมาหลุยส์ ปาสเตอร์ได้นำแนวคิดนี้ไปพัฒนาแนวคิดว่าด้วยจุลชีววิทยา วิธีการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันเช่นนี้ถูกเรียกว่าการให้วัคซีน (vaccination) เนื่องจากวิธีแรกๆ ในการผลิตวัคซีนนั้นทำจากไวรัสที่ทำให้เกิดการติดเชื้อในวัว (ภาษาลาตินว่า vacca) ฝีดาษเป็นโรคที่ติดต่อได้ง่ายและมีอันตรายถึงแก่ชีวิต ผู้ใหญ่ที่ติดเชื้อจะเสียชีวิต 20-60% และเด็กจะเสียชีวิต 80% โรคนี้เป็นสาเหตุของการเสียชีวิตของคนราว 300-500 ล้านคนในศตวรรษที่ 20 ก่อนที่จะถูกกำจัดหมดไปใน ค.ศ. 1979

ในบางสังคมยังมีข้อถกเถียงเรื่องการให้วัคซีนในหลายประเด็น ทั้งทางวิทยาศาสตร์ จริยธรรม การเมือง ความปลอดภัยทางการแพทย์ และทางศาสนา การบาดเจ็บจากวัคซีนนั้นเกิดขึ้นจริงแต่พบได้น้อยมาก ในสหรัฐอเมริกาผู้ที่ได้รับความเสียหายจากการรับวัคซีนจะได้รับค่าชดเชยจากโครงการชดเชยการบาดเจ็บจากวัคซีนแห่งชาติ ความสำเร็จของการป้องกันโรคด้วยการให้วัคซีนในช่วงแรกทำให้ได้รับการยอมรับจากสังคม โครงการให้วัคซีนเป็นวงกว้างเช่นที่ทำโดยรัฐบาลนั้นมีส่วนสำคัญมากในการลดอุบัติการณ์ของการเกิดโรคติดเชื้อในหลายๆ พื้นที่
