เชอโรคี

เชอโรคี (ᏣᎳᎩ, อังกฤษ: Cherokee) หมายถึงกลุ่มชนพื้นเมืองในสหรัฐอเมริกาที่เดิมตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ในบริเวณทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของสหรัฐอเมริกาส่วนใหญ่ในรัฐจอร์เจีย, นอร์ทแคโรไลนา, เซาท์แคโรไลนา และทางตะวันออกของเทนเนสซี ภาษาที่ใช้เป็นภาษาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกลุ่มภาษาอิโรควอย (Iroquoian languages)

ในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 ตามประวัติศาสตร์ที่บอกกล่าวกันมากล่าวว่าเชอโรคีย้ายถิ่นฐานมาจากทางตอนใต้ของบริเวณเกรตเลคส์ในสมัยโบราณ

ในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 เชอโรคีก็ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นหนึ่งใน “ชนเผ่าผู้มีวัฒนธรรมทั้งห้า” (Five Civilized Tribes) เพราะเป็นกลุ่มชาวอเมริกันอินเดียนที่ยอมรับและผสานวัฒนธรรมและความก้าวหน้าของผู้เข้ามาตั้งถิ่นฐานอาณานิคมชาวอเมริกันยุโรป ตามบันทึกสถติของสำนักงานสถิติแห่งสหรัฐอเมริกาของปี ค.ศ. 2000 ชาวเชอโรคีมีด้วยกันกว่า 300,000 คนซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในบรรดากลุ่มชาวอเมริกันอินเดียน 563 กลุ่มที่เป็นที่ยอมรับอย่างเป็นทางการโดยรัฐบาลสหรัฐ

กลุ่มชาวเชอโรคีที่เป็นที่ยอมรับอย่างเป็นทางการโดยรัฐบาลสหรัฐมีด้วยกันสามกลุ่มคือ

• ชาติเชอโรคี (Cherokee Nation)
• กลุ่มสหคีทูวาห์แห่งชาวเชอโรคีอินเดียน (United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians)
• กลุ่มเชอโรคีอินเดียนตะวันออก (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians)

สองกลุ่มแรกมีศูนย์กลางอยู่ที่ทาห์เลควาห์ในโอคลาโฮมา กลุ่มหลังตั้งอยู่ที่เชอโรคีในนอร์ทแคโรไลนา
