ปลาตะเพียนทอง เป็นปลาน้ำจืดชนิดหนึ่ง มีชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Barbonymus altus อยู่ในวงศ์ปลาตะเพียน (Cyprinidae) มีรูปร่างลักษณะคล้ายปลากระแห (B. schwanenfeldi) ซึ่งอยู่ในสกุลเดียวกัน กล่าวคือ มีเกล็ดตามลำตัวแวววาวสีเหลืองทองเหลือบแดงหรือส้ม ครีบหางเป็นสีส้มหรือสีแดงสด แต่ปลาตะเพียนทองมีเกล็ดขนาดใหญ่กว่า ครีบหลังและครีบหางไม่มีแถบสีดำ มีขนาดโตเต็มที่ประมาณไม่เกิน 30 เซนติเมตร
ปลาตะเพียนทองพบอยู่ทั่วไปตามห้วยหนองคลองบึงและแหล่งน้ำขนาดใหญ่ของภาคกลาง ภาคเหนือ และภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของไทย โดยมักจะอยู่ปะปนกับปลากระแหและปลาตะเพียนขาว (B. gonionotus) ด้วยกันเสมอ ๆ สำหรับต่างประเทศพบในลาว กัมพูชา และภาคใต้ของเวียดนาม
ปลาตะเพียนทองเป็นปลาที่คนไทยรู้จักกันดี โดยนิยมบริโภคเป็นอาหารมายาวนานและใช้สานเป็นปลาตะเพียนใบลาน นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นปลาชนิดหนึ่งที่นิยมเลี้ยงเป็นปลาสวยงาม ชื่อเรียกอื่น ๆ เช่น "ปลาตะเพียนหางแดง", "ปลาลำปำ" หรือ "ปลาเลียนไฟ" ในภาษาปักษ์ใต้ ซึ่งเป็นชื่อเรียกซ้ำซ้อนกับปลากระแห และในท้องถิ่นในภาคกลาง ยังเรียกปลาชนิดนี้ว่า ปลากระแหทองอีกด้วย
