แฮร์ริสัน ฟอร์ด เกิดที่ชิคาโกอิลลินอยส์ แม่ชื่อ โดโรธี เป็นแม่บ้าน และอดีตดาราวิทยุ ส่วนพ่อคริสโตเฟอร์ ทำงานวงการโฆษณา และดาราเก่า ฟอร์ดได้ทำงานเกี่ยวกับลูกเสือ เขาได้ยศสูงสุดลำดับสอง Life Scout และยังเคยทำงานเป็นที่ปรึกษาที่ค่ายลูกเสือด้วย เขาจบมัธยมปลายที่ Meneast High School ส่วนระดับวิทยาลัย เขาเรียนไม่จบ ฟอร์ดเข้าเรียนที่ Ripon College ซึ่งเขาลงเรียนวิชาการแสดงด้วย
ฟอร์ด เดินทางมาแอลเอ เมื่ออายุได้ 22 ปี ในปี 1964 เพื่อหางานวิทยุทำ แต่ก็ได้ไปทำงานเป็นตัวประกอบที่ โคลัมเบีย พิคเจอร์ส รับเงินอาทิตย์ละ 150 ดอลลาร์ และ Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (1966) เป็นหนังเรื่องแรกที่เขามีบทพูด แต่หนังช่วงนี้เขายังไม่มีเครดิตชื่อ จนในเรื่อง A Time For Killing (1967) เขาถึงมีชื่อ แฮร์ริสัน เจ.ฟอร์ด แต่ตัว เจ ไม่มีความหมาย เพราะเขาไม่มีชื่อกลาง ใส่เพื่อกันสับสนกับดาราเงียบคนหนึ่ง
เขารับบทเป็นตัวประกอบที่ ยูนิเวอร์แซล เน้นที่ทีวีซีรีส์ แต่สุดท้ายเขากลับไปเป็นช่างทาสี หาเงินให้ภรรยาและลูกชาย 2 คน นอกจากนี้ยังทำงานดูแลเวทีให้วงร็อกอย่าง The Doors ด้วย จนเมื่อเขายังคงทำอาชีพทาสี-ช่างฝีมือ ได้รับการว่าจ้างจาก จอร์จ ลูคัส ให้มาสร้างตู้ใส่ และเขาก็ได้เป็นตัวประกอบใน หนังเรื่อง American Graffiti (1973) รวมถึงงานแสดงในหนังของ ฟรานซิส ฟอร์ด ค็อปโปล่า อย่าง The Conversation (1974) และ Apocalypse Now (1979)
ต่อมา ลูคัส ให้ฟอร์ดช่วยอ่านบทของดาราที่แคสต์มาเล่น ในหนังเรื่อง Star Wars ซึ่งตอนนั้นเอง สตีเว่น สปีลเบิร์ก เห็นแวว และแนะนำให้ลูคัสดึงฟอร์ดมารับบท ฮัน โซโล และเขาก็ได้แสดงในสองภาค ต่อมา The Empire Strikes Back และ Return of the Jedi รวมถึงภาคพิเศษเวอร์ชันทีวีความยาว 2 ชั่วโมง The Star Wars Holiday Special โดยฟอร์ดขอให้ลูคัสเขียนบท โซโล ให้ตายในภาค Return of the Jedi แต่ลูคัสไม่เอา
ต่อมา สปีลเบิรืกได้ให้ฟอร์ดแสดงในหนังแอ็กชัน กับบท อินเดียน่า โจนส์ ใน Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) และ Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) ซึ่งได้สร้างชื่อเสียงเขาอย่างมาก
