ภาพพิมพ์หิน

ภาพพิมพ์หิน หรือ กลวิธีพิมพ์หิน (อังกฤษ: Lithography) “Lithography” มาจากภาษากรีกว่า “λίθος” (lithos) ที่แปลว่า “หิน” สมาสกับคำว่า “γράφω” (graphο) ที่แปลว่า “เขียน” คือเทคนิคการพิมพ์ที่ใช้หินปูนพิมพ์หิน (lithographic limestone) หรือแผ่นโลหะที่มีผิวเรียบ เดิมเทคนิคการพิมพ์ใช้น้ำมันหรือไขมัน แต่ในสมัยใหม่ภาพสร้างขึ้นโดยการใช้พอลิเมอร์ทำปฏิกิริยากับแผ่นพิมพ์อะลูมิเนียม พื้นผิวที่ราบเรียบแบ่งออกเป็น

1. บริเวณซับน้ำ (Hydrophilic) ที่ซับฟิล์มหรือน้ำขณะที่ยังชื้น แต่ไม่ซับหมึก
2. บริเวณ ต้านน้ำ (Hydrophobic) ที่ซับหมึกเพราะเป็นบริเวณที่มีแรงดึงของผิว (surface tension) สูงกว่าบนบริเวณของภาพที่มันกว่าที่ยังคงแห้งเพราะน้ำจะไม่เกาะตัวในบริเวณที่มัน

กระบวนการทำภาพพิมพ์หินค่อนข้างจะแตกต่างกับการพิมพ์แกะลาย (Intaglio printmaking) ที่แผ่นพิมพ์จะได้รับการแกะหรือทำเป็นลายเช่นในการทำภาพพิมพ์มัชฌิมรงค์ (Mezzotint) ที่จะทำเป็นร่องให้ซับหมึก หรือในการทำภาพพิมพ์แกะไม้ และใช้หมึกที่ไม่ใช่หมึกกันน้ำทาบนผิวส่วนที่นูนที่เป็นตัวอักษรหรือภาพก่อนที่จะทำการพิมพ์

ภาพพิมพ์หินเป็นเทคนิคที่ประดิษฐ์ขึ้นโดยนักเขียนชาวบาวาเรีย อล็อยส์ เซอเนอเฟลเดอร์ ในปี ค.ศ. 1796 เพื่อใช้เป็นการลดต้นทุนในการพิมพ์งานศิลปะ ภาพพิมพ์หินสามารถใช้ในการพิมพ์ตัวอักษรหรืองานศิลปะบนกระดาษหรือวัสดุอื่นที่เหมาะสม หนังสือหรือหนังสือพิมพ์ที่พิมพ์เป็นจำนวนมากทั้งหมดในปัจจุบัน ใช้วิธีพิมพ์ที่เรียกว่า “offset lithography” นอกจากนั้นคำว่า “lithography” ก็ยังอาจจะหมายถึง photolithography ซึ่งเป็นเทคนิค microfabrication ที่ใช้ในการทำ integrated circuits และ microelectromechanical systems แม้ว่าเทคนิคที่ใช้จะใกล้เคียงกับการพิมพ์กัดกรด มากกว่าก็ตาม
