Nepenthes flava มาจากภาษาละติน flava แปลว่า "สีเหลือง" เป็นหม้อข้าวหม้อแกงลิงถิ่นเดียวทางด้านเหนือของเกาะสุมาตรา หม้อข้าวหม้อแกงลิงชนิดรู้จักกันมานานในชื่อ "Nepenthes spec. nov. Sumatra" ก่อนที่จะมีการจัดจำแนกเป็น N. flava

N. flava มีความสัมพันธ์ใกล้ชิดกับ N. inermis และ N. jacquelineae อย่างไรก็ตาม N. flava ก็ไม่ใช่ลูกผสมระหว่าง 2 ชนิดนั้น
