Orobanche เป็นสกุลที่มีสปีชีส์มากกว่า 200 สปีชีส์ เป็นพืชเบียนล้มลุกในวงศ์ดอกดิน ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นพืชพื้นเมืองในเขตอบอุ่นตอนเหนือ บางสปีชีส์ของพืชในสกุลนี้ปัจจุบันอยู่ในสกุล Conopholis มีขนาดเล็ก มักจะอยู่ระหว่าง 10–60 เซนติเมตร สิ่งที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของสกุลนี้คือ มีลำต้นสีเหลืองจนถึงสีฟาง มีดอกไม้สีเหลือง สีขาว หรือสีฟ้าเหมือนดอกไม้ในสกุลแอนเทอร์รินัม และที่สำคัญคือไม่มีคลอโรฟิลล์

เนื่องจากไม่มีคลอโรฟิลล์ พืชนี้จึงขึ้นอยู่กับต้นไม้ต้นอื่น พืชนี้มักจะเป็นเมล็ดใต้ดินเป็นหลายปี จนรากของพืชอื่นมาถึง แล้วจึงเติบโตเป็นลักษณะคล้ายกับราก ไปยังรากของอีกต้นหนึ่งแล้วดูดน้ำและสารอาหารจากรากของพืชนั้น

ชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์มาตากภาษากรีกโบราณ ὄροβος ("ขมขื่น") + ἄγχω ("บีบคอ") ชื่อภาษาอังกฤษ "Broomrape" มาจาก broom ("ไม้กวาด") และภาษาละติน rapum ("หัวใต้ดินของพืช")
