กาโรลุส ลินเนียส

กาโรลุส ลินแนอุส (ละติน: Carolus Linnaeus; 23 พฤษภาคม ค.ศ. 1707 – 10 มกราคม ค.ศ. 1778) หรือ คาร์ล ฟอน ลินเนีย (สวีเดน: Carl von Linné, เสียงอ่านภาษาสวีเดน: [ˈkɑːɭ fɔn lɪˈneː] ( ฟังเสียง)) บ้างก็เรียก คาร์ล ลินเนียส (อังกฤษ: Carl Linnaeus) เป็นนักพฤกษศาสตร์ชาวสวีเดน ผู้ริเริ่มการจัดแบ่งสิ่งมีชีวิตออกเป็นหมวดหมู่ และการประยุกต์ใช้ระบบการเรียกชื่อสิ่งมีชีวิตแบบทวินาม ซึ่งมีประโยชน์ในการศึกษาชีววิทยาต่อมาจวบจนปัจจุบัน และเป็นที่รู้จักในฉายา "บิดาอนุกรมวิธานสมัยใหม่"

ชีวิตวัยเยาว์และการศึกษา

คาร์ล ลินเนียส เกิดที่หมู่บ้านรอชัลต์ ในจังหวัดสมอลันด์ ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ทางตอนใต้ของประเทศสวีเดน เมื่อวัยเยาว์ เขาถูกสอนให้ดำเนินรอยตามพ่อ คือเป็นครูสอนศาสนา แต่เขาก็ไม่สนใจเท่าใดนัก ต่อมาเมื่อเจริญวัยขึ้น ได้ไปศึกษายังมหาวิทยาลัยลุนด์ เขาได้จัดทำสวนพฤกษศาสตร์ แต่ก็มีอุปสรรค จนเขาต้องไปศึกษายังมหาวิทยาลัยอุปซอลา

ในตอนแรกก็ลำบากทางการเงินมาก แต่ต่อมาก็ตั้งตัวได้ โดยการอุปการะของโอลอฟ เซลเซียส (Olof Celsius) ต่อมา คาร์ลได้อ่านหนังสือชื่อ Sermo de Structura Florum ของเซบาสเตียง แวยองต์ (Sébastien Vaillant) นักพฤกษศาสตร์ชาวฝรั่งเศส จนได้ความคิดเกี่ยวกับการจำแนกเพศของพืช ในปี พ.ศ. 2272 เขาได้เขียนบทความในเรื่องนี้ จึงถูกทาบทามให้เป็นอาจารย์วิชาพฤกษศาสตร์ในมหาวิทยาลัยอุปซอลา

ชีวิตการงาน

ต่อมา คาร์ลได้รับทุนให้ไปทำการวิจัยยังแลปแลนด์ ทางตอนเหนือสุดของประเทศ และต่อมาก็ได้เดินทางไปเนเธอร์แลนด์เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2278 เพื่อศึกษาวิชาการแพทย์ ปีต่อมา คาร์ลเดินทางไปที่มหาวิทยาลัยออกซฟอร์ด ต่อมาเขาได้กลับไปอัมสเตอร์ดัม แล้วทำงานเกี่ยวกับอนุกรมวิธานต่อจนสำเร็จ เขาเดินทางต่อไปอีกหลายที่ จนกระทั่งกลับมายังกรุงสต็อกโฮล์ม ประเทศสวีเดน

ในปี พ.ศ. 2282 เขาได้เป็นผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งราชวิทยาลัยวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งสวีเดน (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences) สองปีต่อมาเขาได้เป็นอาจารย์วิชาแพทยศาสตร์ที่มหาวิทยาลัยอุปซอลา แต่ต่อมาก็เปลี่ยนไปสอนวิชาพฤกษศาสตร์ ระหว่างที่สอนวิชาพฤกษศาสตร์ เขาได้เป็นผู้นำการสำรวจเพื่อจำแนกพันธุ์พืชและสัตว์นานาชนิดในสวีเดนนับครั้งไม่ถ้วน ขณะที่ว่างจากการเดินทาง เขาก็ทำงานเกี่ยวกับการจำแนกพืชและสัตว์ออกเป็นกลุ่ม ๆ ผลงานเกี่ยวกับการจำแนกสิ่งมีชีวิตของคาร์ลได้เป็นที่รู้จักกันไปทั่วโลก

ชีวิตครอบครัว

คาร์ลสมรสกับซาร่า เอลิซาเบ็ท โมเรีย มีบุตรด้วยกัน 7 คน แต่มีเพียง 5 คน ที่รอดจนเป็นผู้ใหญ่ หนึ่งในนั้นได้แก่ คาโรลัส ลินเนียส ผู้ลูก เมื่อคาร์ลผู้พ่อถึงแก่กรรม คาร์ลผู้ลูกก็สืบทอดตำแหน่งศาสตราจารย์ของพ่อ ทว่าอยู่ได้เพียงห้าปี คาร์ลผู้ลูกก็ถึงแก่กรรม งานของคาร์ลผู้ลูก มักจะอ้างถึงโดยใช้คำว่า filius

ชีวิตบั้นปลาย

ในช่วงปลายของชีวิต สุขภาพของคาร์ลเริ่มอ่อนแอลง เขาป่วยเป็นโรคเกาต์ ปวดฟันและเริ่มมีอาการหนักมากเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2317 และ อีก 4 ปีต่อมา คาร์ลก็ถึงแก่กรรมขณะกำลังทำพิธีในโบสถ์เมืองอุปซอลา รวมอายุได้ 71 ปีเศษ ทั้งนี้ ร่างของเขาก็ถูกฝังอยู่ ณ โบสถ์แห่งนั้น พร้อมกับร่างของบุตรชาย

คาร์ล ลินเนียสมีชีวิตอยู่ในระหว่างปลายรัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระเจ้าเสือและปลายรัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรี

ผลงานหนังสือ

หนังสือชื่อ Systema Naturae พิมพ์ครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2278 ซึ่งมีความหนาเพียง 11 หน้าเท่านั้น แต่ฉบับพิมพ์ครั้งที่ 10 ซึ่งพิมพ์เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2301 ได้จำแนกสัตว์ได้ถึง 4,400 สปีชีส์ และพืชอีก 7,700 สปีชีส์ ถึงแม้ว่าชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ที่ใช้ในสมัยนั้นจะดูเยิ่นเย้อยืดยาว เช่น"Physalis annua ramosissima, ramis angulosis glabris, foliis dentato-serratis" แต่ในหนังสือของคาร์ล ชื่อเหล่านี้ได้ถูกจัดให้เป็นชื่อทวินาม ซึ่งเป็นระบบที่คาร์ลเองไม่ได้ตั้งขึ้น แต่ถูกคิดค้นโดยสองพี่น้องตระกูลเบาฮีน (คัสพาร์ เบาฮีน (Gaspard Bauhin) และโยฮันน์ เบาฮีน (Johann Bauhin)) นักพฤกษศาสตร์ชาวสวิส
