จันทน์ เป็นชื่อของไม้หอมหลายชนิด ชื่อมาจากภาษาสันสกฤต “candanam” ที่มาจากภาษากรีก “sandanon” ชื่อในภาษาต่าง ๆ ก็ได้แก่:
ถ้ากล่าวถึงตามความหมายที่แท้จริงแล้วก็จะเป็นไม้ต้นที่มาจากสกุล Santalum ของวงศ์ย่านตีเมีย ที่ใช้เพราะเป็นไม้ที่มีน้ำมันหอม (essential oil) ไม้ชนิดนี้มีสีเหลือง หนัก และมีลายละเอียด (fine-grained) จันทน์เป็นไม้เห็นคุณค่าของกลิ่นหอมและคุณสมบัติว่าเป็นยามาเป็นเวลาหลายพันปี
บางครั้งไม้ชนิดอื่นที่มีน้ำมันหอมแต่คนละตระกูลก็เรียกว่า “จันทน์” ด้วย จันทน์เป็นไม้ที่มีต้นกำเนิดจากอเมริกากลาง และอเมริกาใต้ และแคริบเบียน น้ำมันที่ได้จากจันทน์กลั่นที่ประเทศเฮติ
