ปลาพลวงทอง เป็นปลาน้ำจืด ชนิดหนึ่งในกลุ่มปลามาห์เซียร์ มีชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ ว่า Neolissochilus soroides อยู่ในวงศ์ปลาตะเพียน (Cyprinidae) มีลักษณะคล้ายปลาพลวงหิน (N. stracheyi ) ที่อยู่ในสกุลเดียวกัน แต่ว่ามีสีเหลืองเหลือบทองที่ด้านข้างลำตัวเห็นได้ชัดเจนกว่า และมีครีบต่าง ๆ สีแดงส้ม ด้านหลังมีสีน้ำตาล และไม่มีแถบสีดำด้านข้างลำตัวเหมือนปลาพลวงชนิดอื่น ๆ อาศัยอยู่ตามต้นน้ำลำธารที่สะอาด และไหลแรงในป่าหรือน้ำตก โดยในประเทศไทย จะพบได้ที่จังหวัดแถบภาคตะวันออก และพบได้จนถึงประเทศมาเลเซีย มีความยาวเต็มที่ 50 เซนติเมตร
นิยมตกเป็นเกมกีฬาและเลี้ยงเป็นปลาสวยงาม ปัจจุบันสามารถเพาะขยายพันธุ์ได้แล้ว และถือเป็นปลาประจำจังหวัดระยอง
