การกระจายพันธุ์

กวางดาว หรือ กวางทอง (อังกฤษ: Chital, Cheetal, Spotted deer, Axis deer) เป็นกวางที่มีถิ่นอาศัยในพื้นที่ป่าของประเทศศรีลังกา, ประเทศเนปาล, ประเทศบังกลาเทศ, ประเทศภูฏาน, ประเทศอินเดีย, และมีประชากรกลุ่มเล็ก ๆ ในประเทศปากีสถาน กวางดาวมีความสูงจรดหัวไหล่ประมาณ 90 ซม. หนักประมาณ 85 กก. ตัวผู้ใหญ่กว่าตัวเมีย มีช่วงอายุประมาณ 8–14 ปี

ลักษณะ

กวางดาวมีขนสีน้ำตาลแกมเหลืองออกสีชมพู มีจุดสีขาว ส่วนท้องมีสีขาว เขามีสามกิ่ง โค้งคล้ายพิณ มีการผลัดเขาทุกปี ยาวได้ถึง 75 ซม. (2.5 ฟุต) เมื่อเทียบกับเนื้อทรายซึ่งเป็นญาติใกล้ชิดแล้ว กวางดาวถูกสร้างมาให้เหมาะสำหรับการวิ่งมากกว่า และมีสัณฐานที่พัฒนาสูงกว่าคือปลายเขาสั้นตามส่วน และกล่องหู มีขนาดเล็กกว่า มีโพรงจมูกขนาดใหญ่ ตัวผู้มีขนาดใหญ่กว่าตัวเมีย สูงประมาณ 90 ซm (35 in) จรดไหล่ หัวถึงลำตัวยาว 170 ซm (67 in) หางยาว 20 ซม. (7.9 นิ้ว) หนัก 30 ถึง 75 กก. (66 ถึง 170 ปอนด์) ตัวเมียหนัก 25 ถึง 45 กก. (55 ถึง 99 ปอนด์) ตัวผู้ที่มีขนาดใหญ่มากๆ หนักได้ถึง 98 ถึง 110 กก. (220 ถึง 240 ปอนด์) มีช่วงชีวิต 8–14 ปี

กวางดาวมีการวิวัฒต่อมกลิ่นบริเวณดวงตาสูง ซึ่งมีขนแข็งที่คล้ายกิ่งไม้เล็กๆ รวมทั้งต่อมกลิ่นที่หลังขา ตัวผู้มีต่อมกลิ่นบริเวณดวงตาใหญ่กว่าตัวเมียและเปิดออกบ่อยครั้งเมื่อตอบสนองสิ่งเร้า

การกระจายพันธุ์

กวางดาวมีการกระจายพันธุ์ในประเทศอินเดีย ตลอดไปจนถึงเนปาล ภูฏาน บังกลาเทศ และศรีลังกา ทางตะวันตกสิ้นสุดที่ทางตะวันออกของรัฐราชสถานและรัฐคุชราต ทางเหนือสิ้นสุดไปตามแนวเข็มขัดบาบาร์-เทไร ตีนเขาของเทือกเขาหิมาลัยและจากรัฐอุตตรประเทศและรัฐอุตตราขัณฑ์ผ่านไปถึงเนปาล ตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของเบงกอลและรัฐสิกขิม และต่อจากนั้นไปทางตะวันตกของรัฐอัสสัมและป่าชุมชนของประเทศภูฏานที่ต่ำกว่าระดับน้ำทะเล 1,100 เมตร จุดสิ้นสุดทางตะวันออกนั้น ผ่านทางตะวันตกของรัฐอัสสัม ถึงป่าซันเดอร์แบน ของเบงกอลตะวันตกและบังกลาเทศ ทางใต้สิ้นสุดที่ศรีลังกา มีการพบกวางดาวเป็นช่วง ๆ ตามพื้นที่ป่าที่วางตัวตลอดแหลมอินเดีย แต่ปัจจุบันพบได้แค่ในป่าซันเดอร์แบนในบังกลาเทศเท่านั้น ส่วนพื้นอื่นได้สูญพันธุ์ไปจากธรรมชาติแล้ว

กวางดาวถือเป็นสัตว์ชนิดแรกที่มีจัดแสดงในสวนสัตว์ดุสิต หรือ เขาดินวนา สวนสัตว์แห่งแรกในประเทศไทย
