ดาราจักรน้ำวน

ดาราจักรน้ำวน (อังกฤษ: Whirlpool Galaxy; [1]บางครั้งรู้จักในชื่อ วัตถุเมสสิเยร์ M51a หรือ NGC 5194) เป็นดาราจักรชนิดก้นหอยที่เกิดอันตรกิริยาขนาดใหญ่ อยู่ในบริเวณกลุ่มดาวสุนัขล่าเนื้อ ห่างออกไปประมาณ 23 ล้านปีแสง นับเป็นหนึ่งในบรรดาดาราจักรชนิดก้นหอยที่มีชื่อเสียงมากที่สุดบนท้องฟ้า ดาราจักรนี้กับคู่ของมัน (ดาราจักร NGC 5195) สามารถสังเกตเห็นได้ง่ายโดยนักดาราศาสตร์สมัครเล่นทั่วไป โดยสามารถมองเห็นดาราจักรทั้งสองแห่งนี้ได้โดยกล้องสองตาธรรมดา สำหรับนักดาราศาสตร์อาชีพแล้ว ดาราจักรน้ำวนนี้ก็ยังเป็นวัตถุยอดนิยมสำหรับใช้ในการศึกษาทำความเข้าใจกับโครงสร้างของดาราจักร (โดยเฉพาะโครงสร้างส่วนที่เกี่ยวกับแขนกังหัน) และอันตรกิริยาระหว่างดาราจักร
