นกกวัก (ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์: Amaurornis phoenicurus) เป็นนกน้ำในวงศ์นกอัญชัน (Rallidae) ที่อยู่กระจายไปทั่วเอเชียใต้และเอเชียอาคเนย์ มีสีเทาเข้มเหมือนกระดานชนวน ลำตัวสั้น มีใบหน้า อก และท้องขาว ขาและนิ้วยาว อาศัยอยู่ตามหนองน้ำ มันใจกล้ากว่านกอัญชันชนิดอื่น ๆ จึงมักเห็นก้าวเท้าอย่างช้า ๆ ยกหางตรง ไปในหนองน้ำโล่งหรือแม้แต่ที่ระบายน้ำใกล้ ๆ ถนนที่มีรถวิ่ง มักออกหากินในช่วงฟ้าสางหรือพลบค่ำ เดินหากินบนใบพืชน้ำ เช่น บัว จอก แหน ในฤดูผสมพันธ์คือฤดูฝนหลังเริ่มฝนตก ก็จะร้องเสียงดัง "กวัก ๆ" เป็นเสียงต่ำซ้ำ ๆ ในประเทศไทย เป็นสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองตามพระราชบัญญัติสงวนและคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่าพุทธศักราช 2535 จึงห้ามล่า พยายามล่า ห้ามค้า ห้ามนำเข้าหรือส่งออก ห้ามครอบครอง ห้ามเพาะพันธุ์ ห้ามเก็บหรือทำอันตรายรัง การห้ามการครอบครองและการค้ามีผลไปถึงไข่และซาก

นกกวักที่โตแล้วโดยมากมีสีเทาเข้มด้านบนและข้าง ๆ มีหน้า คอ อก และท้องขาว ท้องด้านล่าง ๆ และใต้หางมีสีน้ำตาลเหลือง ข้าง ๆ ตัวจะเรียบเพื่อให้เดินผ่านต้นอ้อ ต้นกก หญ้า และพุ่มไม้ไปง่าย ๆ มีขาและนิ้วยาว หางสั้น ปากและขาเหลือง ตัวผู้ตัวเมียคล้าย ๆ กัน ตัวเมียเล็กกว่าเล็กน้อย ลูกนกมีสีจางกว่า ลูกนกที่ขนยังปุยมีสีดำเหมือนกับนกอัญชันทั้งหมด

นกจัดเป็นสปีชีส์ย่อยหลายสปีชีส์ตามที่อยู่ซึ่งกระจายไปอย่างกว้างขวาง สปีชีส์ย่อยต้นแบบ (nominate) มาจากประเทศศรีลังกาแต่มักใช้ครอบคลุมสปีชีส์ย่อย chinensis ในอินเดียแผ่นดินใหญ่และเขตรอบ ๆ โดยทางทิศตะวันตกไปจนถึงคาบสมุทรอาหรับ และทางทิศตะวันออกจนเกือบถึงญี่ปุ่น สปีชีส์ย่อยที่เหลือมาจากเกาะต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งสปีชีส์ย่อย insularis ในหมู่เกาะอันดามันและหมู่เกาะนิโคบาร์, สปีชีส์ย่อย midnicobaricus ในหมู่เกาะนิโคบาร์ส่วนกลาง, leucocephala ในเกาะคาร์นิโคบาร์ (ในหมู่เกาะนิโคบาร์), maldivus ในหมู่เกาะมัลดีฟส์, javanicus ในเกาะชวา และ leucomelanus ในเกาะซูลาเวซีและหมู่เกาะซุนดาน้อย

ที่อยู่และการกระจายตัว

ที่อยู่ของนกก็คือหนองน้ำทั่วเอเชียเขตร้อนตั้งแต่ปากีสถานไปจนถึงอินโดนีเซีย มักจะอยู่ในที่ราบแต่ก็พบในเขตภูเขา เช่น ในเมืองพักร้อน Nainital (1,300 เมตร) รัฐอุตตราขัณฑ์ และในเทือกเขา High Range (1,500 ม.) รัฐเกรละ ประเทศอินเดีย นกอัญชันขนาดใหญ่ยาว 32 ซม. นี้เป็นนกอยู่ประจำในเขตที่อยู่ของมันทั้งหมด มันอาจจะอพยพไปตั้งรกรากใหม่ในที่ใกล้ ๆ เช่น ดังที่พบในเกาะภูเขาไฟรากาตา (Rakata) ในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย แม้โดยมากจะพบใกล้น้ำจืด แต่ก็พบใกล้น้ำกร่อยหรือแม้แต่ที่ฝั่งทะเลเมื่อไม่มีน้ำจืด เช่น ในเกาะภูเขาไฟบาร์เร็น (Barren Island) ของหมู่เกาะอันดามัน

พฤติกรรมและนิเวศวิทยา

นกมักจะเห็นเดี่ยว ๆ หรือเป็นคู่เมื่อค่อย ๆ หากินบนพื้นตามริมหนองน้ำแต่ก็อาจปีนป่ายขึ้นไปบนไม้เตี้ย ๆ เหมือนกัน หางมักจะยกกระตุกไปมาเมื่อเดิน ใช้ปากไซ้ตามโคลนหรือน้ำตื้น ๆ และใช้ตาเพื่องับเอาอาหาร โดยหลักกินแมลง (มีรายงานว่ากินด้วงเป็นจำนวนมาก) ปลาเล็ก (ซึ่งมักล้างอย่างระมัดระวังในน้ำ) สัตว์น้ำที่ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลัง เมล็ดพืช เช่น Pithecolobium dulce ในสกุลมะขามเทศ บางครั้งก็หากินในน้ำที่ลึกกว่าด้วย

ฤดูผสมพันธุ์/ทำรังโดยหลักอยู่ระหว่างเดือนมิถุนายนจนถึงตุลาคม แต่ก็ต่างกันเฉพาะที่ ๆ ด้วย นกทำรังในที่แห้งบนพื้นระหว่างไม้ของหนองน้ำแล้ววางไข่ 6-7 ฟอง นกจีบกันด้วยการโค้งตัว ถูปาก และงับเบา ๆ ไข่ฟักภายในประมาณ 19 วัน ทั้งตัวผู้ตัวเมียฟักไข่และดูแลลูกนก ลูกนกมักดำลงใต้น้ำเพื่อหนีสัตว์ล่า มีรายงานว่า นกที่โตแล้วจะสร้างรังเพื่อพักอยู่หรือเพื่อฟักไข่ เป็นที่ ๆ ทั้งลูกนกและพ่อแม่จะมาพัก

นกอัญชันมักจะซ่อนตัว แต่นกกวักกลับมักเห็นในที่โล่ง อาจส่งเสียงดังโดยเฉพาะช่วงฟ้าสางหรือพลบค่ำโดยร้องเสียงต่ำ ๆ มีรายงานว่า สปีชีส์ย่อย insularis ในหมู่เกาะอันดามันร้องเหมือนเป็ด

ชื่อพื้นเมืองของนกนี้มักจะตั้งตามเสียงร้อง เช่น ruak-ruak ในภาษามลายู และ korawakka ในภาษาสิงหล แม้ชื่อที่ตั้งโดยวิธีอื่นก็สามัญเช่นกัน เช่น "Dahuk" ในภาษาเบงกอล (ใช้ในบังกลาเทศและอินเดียในเขตที่พูดเบงกอล) และ "Dauk" (ডাউক) ในภาษาอัสสัม ส่วนในรัฐโอฑิศา มันเรียกว่า "Daahuka" (ଡାହୁକ) โดยเป็นภาษาโอเดีย

นักเขียนธรรมชาตินิยมชาวสกอตแลนด์ เอ็ดวาร์ด แฮมิลตัน เอตเก็น พรรณนาเสียงนกอย่างขำ ๆ ว่า "มันเริ่มจากร้องเสียงดังลั่นเหมือนทำให้หมีร้องโดยย่างหมีอย่างช้า ๆ เหนือกองไฟใหญ่ แล้วเปลี่ยนอย่างฉับพลันเป็นเสียงใส ๆ โดยร้องซ้ำ ๆ เหมือนกับเสียงคู ๆ ของนกเขา/นกพิราบ"
